Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins kept the excitement going until the very end with a 2-1 win over the Manchester Monarchs at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Tuesday night to take 2-1 lead in their best-of-seven Atlantic Division Finals Series. All three goals were scored on special teams as Nate DiCasmirro netted a short-handed goal while T.J. Trevelyan tallied the power play winner.
DiCasmirro got the scoring started late in the second period when he rushed for a loose puck behind the net of Monarchs goalie Barry Brust. With his team short-handed, the veteran found the puck, collided with Brust, and managed to regain control to wrap around the net for a partially empty-net goal and a 1-0 P-Bruins advantage. The goal was DiCasmirro's third of the postseason and came unassisted at 16:17 of the second.
Manchester evened the game at one late in regulation while on the power play. Defenseman Oleg Tverdovsky fired a shot on P-Bruins netminder Hannu Toivonen from the low wing and picked up his second goal with just 2:09 remaining in the game. The helpers went to Peter Harrold and Patrick O'Sullivan. Only 21 seconds later, Providence went on the man-advantage after Sean Bentivoglio was tripped by Gabe Gauthier. Within 18 seconds, the P-Bruins capitalized. Defensemen Ryan Glenn and Sean Curry worked the puck around the perimeter before Glenn opted to slap a shot on net, redirected in front by Trevelyan for his third goal of the playoffs. The goal came with 1:30 remaining in the contest. The rookie now has a five-game points-streak while Curry extended his stretch to four games.
Toivonen earned the victory, his sixth, with 24 saves and Brust took his first loss of the postseason with 26 stops. Each team scored once on the power play, Providence in seven attempts and Manchester in five opportunities. The Monarchs led the penalty minutes battle 14-10.
Game 4 of the series is Wednesday night, also in Rhode Island at 7:05 p.m. The teams return to New Hampshire for Game 5 on Saturday, a 7:35 p.m. start. If necessary, Game 6 will be back in Providence on Monday and the potential Game 7 is scheduled for Wednesday, May 16 in Manchester, both 7:05 p.m. starts. This series marks only the second time that Providence and Manchester have met in the postseason. The P-Bruins took a six-game set during the 2005 Atlantic Division Semi-Finals en route to the Eastern Conference Finals.
