Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield Falcons 2-1 this evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Josh Hennessyand Kyle MacKinnon scored for the P-Bruins as they extended their win streak to two games.
Looking to gain ground in the respectful divisions, both Providence and Springfield exchanged scoring opportunities throughout the first frame. Alexandre Giroux capitalized on the man-advantage at 10:52 to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The P-Bruins continued to throw shots at the net, causing traffic in front of Falcons goalie Manny Legace. Their efforts paid off at 16:50 when Hennessy roofed a wrist shot over Legace's left shoulder for his ninth goal of the season. Defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk assisted on the tying goal. Acrobatic saves by Anton Khudobin kept the Falcons off the board in the final minutes of the period and the teams went into the first intermission tied at one.
After a scoreless second period, Providence continued to create opportunities in front of Legace. They nearly took the lead halfway through the frame when Craig Cunningham stuffed the puck over the goal line, but the goal was called off after the referees ruled that whistle had blown. Khudobin continued to be solid between the pipes, blocking attempts from Cam Atkinson and Martin St. Pierre. On the other end, at 17:21 Matt Bartkowski's shot from the point was intercepted by MacKinnon who left Legace looking with a backhander top-shelf to take a 2-1 lead. Calle Ridderwall also assisted on the go-ahead goal. The P-Bruins stalwarted last minute attempts from Springfield to take the 2-1 win.
Khudobin's 34 saves earned him the win, while Talbot suffered the loss, blocking 36 of 38 Providence attempts. The P-Bruins went 0-for-5 on the power play and 1-for-2 on the penalty kill.
The P-Bruins are on the road in Connecticut on Saturday. The club returns to The Dunk on Sunday to face off with Bridgeport at 4:05 p.m. To purchase our special tickets offers or for more information, call the Providence Bruins ticket office at (401) 273-5000 or log on to the team website at www.providencebruins.com.
