Altoona Curve News Release
RICHMOND, VA - Curve left hander Rudy Owens turned in one of his best outings of the 2010 season hurling 6.0 innings, allowing just a pair of runs on three hits and striking out nine but Richmond Flying Squirrels pitching and timely hitting was better as they secured a 4-1 win on Thursday night at The Diamond.
Owens tossed 4.2 innings of no-hit baseball before Richmond's Ryan Lormand doubled with two-outs to break up the no-hit bid.
Equally as good, however was Squirrels right-hander Felix Romero. The 29-year old held the Curve off the scoreboard through the first five innings of the game. However, in the sixth, Owens would help his own cause offensively by cracking his third hit of the season to the right-centerfield alley for a leadoff double. A Chase d'Arnaud base hit would put runners at the corners before Josh Harrison grounded into a double-play that brought home the game's first run and put Altoona in front, 1-0.
The lead was short-lived, though, as with a man aboard in the bottom of the sixth, Richmond's Thomas Neal belted a two-run homer to put the Squirrel's up 2-1 and hang Owens with the tough-luck loss.
In the seventh against Curve righty Ramon Aguero, Richmond would tack on a pair of runs with two outs. A wild pitch and a Darren Ford two-out RBI single would pad Richmond's (50-55) lead to propel them to the win.
Altoona will look to grab the second game of the four-game set on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Tony Watson (3-0, 2.30) will make his second start for the Altoona Curve while Richmond will counter with RHP Mike McDonald (2-7, 4.67). Airtime on flagship radio station ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and Altoona Curve Radio Network affiliates is 6:35 p.m.
NOTES: Altoona pitching struck out 12 more hitters on Thursday. Over the road trip, Curve hurlers have struck out 51 batters in four games...Miles Durham was 0-for-4, ending his four-game hitting streak.
