Owen Sound Ready for Thursday's Action
November 11, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release
The CHL Canada/Russia Series descends on Owen Sound tomorrow night, and the Russians are looking for revenge.
Beginning in the Western Hockey League on Monday night, the CHL has opened the Series on a positive note with a pair of wins over the Russian side.
The WHL won the opener 7-3 on Monday in Kelowna, before following that up with a 4-2 win on Tuesday night in Kamloops.
Now the onus is on Team OHL, which includes Owen Sound Attack players Thomas Schemitsch and Michael McNiven, to increase the lead over Damir Sharipzyanov and the Russians.
Schemitsch will suit up on the blue line for the OHL side, despite missing the first month of the season with a broken wrist he suffered while at the Florida Panthers' rookie camp.
Despite having only played in five of the Attack's 18 games, Schemitsch has proven he didn't lose a stride because of the lay-off. The 6'4 defender is producing at a point per game clip with two goals and three helpers in his five appearances.
In the team's last outing against Hamilton, Schemitsch recorded a goal and an assist, but it was Thursday night opponent that stole the show.
Making his 2nd appearance for Team Russia in the CHL Canada/Russia Series, Damir Sharipzyanov enters Thursday night also having seen less action this year because of a wrist injury.
Like Schemitsch, his summertime setback hasn't slowed the Los Angeles Kings prospect down at all.
Held pointless in his first six games of the year, Sharipzyanov exploded in the Attack's last two outings, including a one goal, three point performance against the Bulldogs on Saturday, Nov. 7.
Rounding out Owen Sound's representation on the ice on Thursday night is Attack netminder and Montreal Canadiens signee Michael McNiven.
Winner of the Ontario Hockey League's FW Dinty Moore award in 2014-15, McNiven has posted an 8-5-2-1 record thus far in 2015-16, including a solid 2.59 goals against average and .919 save percentage.
Similar to Sharipzyanov, McNiven is no stranger to CHL events, as the 18 year old was a late addition to last year's BMO Top Prospects Game in St. Catharines. The Habs prospect is also set to suit up for Team OHL when the Series stops in Windsor on Monday, Nov. 16.
With a capacity crowd expected at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre for Thursday night's 7:00pm puck drop, fans are encouraged to arrive early to secure parking.
