Troops Acquire Vertiy from Spitfires

North Bay Battalion News Release
NORTH BAY, Ont. - The North Bay Battalion has acquired left winger Daniil Vertiy in a trade with the Windsor Spitfires, the Ontario Hockey League club announced Wednesday.
The Battalion received Vertiy and a 10th-round pick in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection in exchange for a sixth-round choice in 2016 and a fourth-rounder in 2017.
Vertiy, who turns 17 on Thursday, was a second-round pick, 26th overall, in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection from the North York Rangers minor midgets after moving to Toronto from his native Russia in 2013. Holding Canadian citizenship, he applied for OHL Priority Selection eligibility and is not considered an import.
He had two goals in 16 games with Windsor this season after scoring three goals and earning six assists for nine points in 49 games as a rookie in 2014-15.
The trade came a day after the announcement that left winger Zach Bratina, the Troops' leading scorer with 12 goals in as many games this season, had decided to retire from hockey because of persistent concussion-related symptoms.
"I wanted to get a left winger to replace Bratina and to continue to build our group of young forwards," said Stan Butler, Battalion director of hockey operations and head coach.
Vertiy, from Nizhnevartovsk, a city of 250,000 in the West Siberian oil-producing region, stands six feet and weighs 196 pounds. He played one game with the Ontario Junior Hockey League's North York Rangers, then coached by current Battalion assistant John Dean, in 2013-14.
The 2017 pick sent to Windsor is one of three acquired by North Bay on Sept. 29, 2014, in a trade that saw overage centre Jamie Lewis go the other way. The 2016 selection that now has been moved to the Battalion originally belonged to the Saginaw Spirit.
Vertiy, scheduled to arrive in the Gateway City in time for practice on Thursday, is expected to be in the lineup when the Battalion visits the Sudbury Wolves at 7 p.m. Friday. The game can be heard live in North Bay on Country 600 CKAT.
