Owen Sound Fall to Kitchener in Low Scoring Affair
November 14, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack and Kitchener Rangers engaged in a low scoring affair at the Bayshore on Saturday, Nov. 15.
It was the 3rd overtime meeting between the teams on the year, and this time it would be Kitchener coming out on top with a 2-1 victory.
The first period was played at a breakneck pace, and it seemed it ended just as it was beginning.
Only 28 minutes of realtime elapsed in the opening frame, and the Attack and Rangers went to the intermission locked at zeros in large part to a pair of timely saves by Michael McNiven.
Tested nine times in the first, McNiven's biggest save was a pad stop on a Kitchener 2-on-1 with under one minute to play, a save that sent the teams to 2nd period looking for the game's 1st goal.
The goalless drought continued well into the 2nd period, as neither team could find the back of the net until the 12:20 mark.
Almost expected in a low scoring game, the first tally of the night came on a weird bounce in front of the Attack net with Kitchener's Adam Mascherin directing a loose puck past McNiven.
While only one goal was scored in the frame, the intensity level of the game ramped up considerably with a pair of spirited tilts.
Before either team had gotten on the board, Owen Sound's Jacob Friend and Kitchener's Connor Hall engaged in a back and forth affair that played undercard to a scrap between Jarett Meyer and Sean Allen late in the period.
Meyer used his 6'9 reach to hold off the smaller Allen and give the Attack the momentum they craved trailing 1-0 heading into the 3rd period.
Like the 1st and 2nd periods, scoring was also hard to come by in the final 20 minutes of action, but when the lamp was lit, it was a big one.
With almost 16 minutes gone in the 3rd the Attack finally solved the Rangers' rookie netminder and tied the game at one.
Scoring his 6th of the season on a sharp angled shot, Jonah Gadjovich wired a snapshot between the legs of Luke Richardson. Kevin Hancock picked up the lone assist on Gadjovich's goal, which would send the teams to overtime in search of the game winner.
The game winner would come with 1:34 left in the extra frame, and unfortunately for Attack it would come off the stick of Kitchener's Ryan MacInnis, giving the Rangers a 2-1 victory.
Owen Sound's lone goal scorer, Jonah Gadjovich, was named the Mac Taylor Corporation 3rd Star of the Game thanks to his goal. Michael McNiven's 27 save performance was good for 2nd star, while Luke Richardson picked up 1st star honours, winning in his OHL debut.
Damir Sharipzyanov was named the game's Hatten Home Hardware Building Centre Hardest Working Player of the Game in the loss.
Owen Sound gets right back at it with an Investment Planning Counsel Sunday tilt with the Saginaw Spirit on November 15.
Puck drops at 2:00pm and the first 200 children through the door receive free popcorn while all attendants will have a chance to win an autographed jersey.
Following the game, everyone is encouraged to join the Attack for a post game skate and autograph session.
