BARRIE, ONT. - The Saginaw Spirit continued their weekend road trip at the Barrie Molson Centre for a matchup against the Barrie Colts. Saturday's game marked the first of two meetings against the Colts this season.
The Spirit were coming off a tough defeat at the hands of the top-ranked Kitchener Rangers on Friday night at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium. The Rangers defeated the Spirit by a score of 6-2. Saginaw rookies Cole Coskey and Brady Gilmour were the goal scorer's for the Spirit on Friday night. The Spirit were looking to turn the weekend around in Barrie, but were unable to beat their Central Division rival. The Saginaw Spirit dropped their first game against the Barrie Colts, as Connor Brown scored the lone goal in the Spirit's 5-1 defeat.
In the first period, Barrie's Lucas Chiodo fed a drop back pass to Rasmus Andersson, who found Zachary Magwood in front of Saginaw's net. Magwood slipped the puck past Saginaw's starting goaltender David Ovsjannikov's left pad at 12:05 of the first period, giving the Colts a 1-0 lead over the Spirit. Despite being outshot 12-8 in the first frame, Ovsjannikov kept the Spirit in the game, fighting hard and making some excellent saves to keep the Spirit within one-goal of the Colts.
Early second period penalties for Barrie put Saginaw on a 5-on-3 power play. As Barrie's Roy Radke and Justin Scott sat in the penalty box, Saginaw's captain Connor Brown scored top shelf on Barrie's goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood, tying the game 1-1. Devon Paliani and Matthew Kreis registered assists on Brown's eighth goal of the season. The Barrie Colts responded with a tally of their own, after Ben Hawerchuk regained the Colts one-goal lead at 15:48 of the period. Things took a quick turn of events as Andrew Mangiapane scored two goals within 22 seconds for the Barrie Colts, insuring a 4-1 lead over the Saginaw Spirit. The Barrie Colts outshot the Saginaw Spirit in the second period, 13-12.
The Saginaw Spirit put the penalty kill unit to the test, as ArtemArtemov was whistled for slashing at 7:49 of the third period. On the ensuing power play, the Barrie Colts furthered the scoring gap at 9:16 of the third frame, as Andrew Mangiapanenetted his third goal of the evening to secure a 5-1 victory over the Saginaw Spirit.
