Overtime Heroics in Langley

Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland completed the sweep against the Vancouver Giants in the home-and-home series with a 2-1 overtime victory on Saturday night. The Hawks improved to 7-3-0-1 this year as alternate captain Brendan De Jong netted the game winner 1:16 into the overtime period.

The Hawks picked up right where they left off on Friday night and jumped to a first period lead on the road. The Winterhawks generated a rush up the boards and Jaydon Dureau made a tremendous pass through two Giants sticks to find Reece Newkirk on the left side for his eighth goal of the season.

It was a relatively quiet second period, but the Giants found the back of the net on a rebound to tie the game at one. Rookie forward Yannik Valenti scored his first of his WHL career. Only 11 shots were taken in the third period and neither team could find the back of the net.

For the second time this season, the Hawks went to overtime, and tonight, they ended on the winning side. Vancouver got the first prime scoring chance of the 3-on-3 period, but Shane Farkas was equal to the task. The game winner came just after a minute in as Brendan De Jong skated into the zone on the left wing side, took a hard backhanded shot on Trent Miner's pads and buried an impossible rebound over the goaltenders shoulders.

The next home games will come on Saturday, October 27th and Sunday, October 28th against the Kamloops Blazers. Individual tickets are now on sale. Be sure to visit winterhawks.com/tickets for full details on pricing and availability.
