Otters Sweep Joliet for Sixth Straight Win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Evansville Otters (36-18) won 6-4 against the Joliet Slammers (22-32) on Sunday night. With the victory, Evansville sweeps Joliet, wins all six games this season from the Slammers and finish the current homestand a perfect 6-0.

Down 3-0, Evansville rallied back in the bottom of the first with a leadoff walk from outfielder John Schultz and a two-run home run from infielder Josh Allen.

Trailing by a run, the Otters evened the score in the second with a Schultz RBI double to center field and went ahead on a third inning sacrifice fly from first baseman Nik Balog.

Up 4-3, Evansville pitcher Tyler Vail (6-2) settled down. After giving up three runs in the first, the right-hander retired 11 of the final 12 hitters he faced. Vail earned his fourth straight win in as many starts, throwing a quality start, allowing just three runs in 6.0 innings.

Leading by one, the Otters increased the lead in the seventh with a two-run single from infielder Shayne Houck.

After Vail exited the game, reliever Connor Little would pitch the final 3.0 innings for his first save of the year. Little issued a run in the ninth but retired the final batter Carlos Lopez on a strike out to complete the contest.

Allen finishes the night 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and two runs batted in. The home run was his third this season.

Houck also totaled two hits with a run and two RBIs. He now leads the team with 34 RBIs this season.

Schultz was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. With a second inning double, Schultz is now tied with David Robinson for the most total bases in franchise history (374).

Evansville is off on Monday but begins a three game series at Traverse City on Tuesday, July 21. The Otters are back at home on Friday, August 24 for a weekend series with the Washington Wild Things.
