
Rascals Walk Off, Blow out Aviators in Doubleheader Sweep

Loves Park, IL - The Rascals (28-24) swept the Rockford Aviators (30-21) in a doubleheader, winning 8-7 and 10-0 on Saturday, July 18 at Aviator Stadium.
Game 1 was a continuation from Friday, June 25, a scoreless game through one inning. The contest was resumed in the second inning, and the Rascals played as the home team; they walked off 8-7 in the 11th inning.
RHP Joe Scanio officially started the game, tossing a perfect inning back on June 25 before the game was suspended due to rain. Roberto Padilla started for the Aviators and pitched a scoreless first frame. RHP Tim Koons took the hill in the continuations and threw 3.0 innings. The righty had won his last six starts but took a no-decision after allowing five runs and nine hits.
Rockford took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Devon Rodriguez and Elijah Trail each singled and scored on a double by Anthony Renteria. Joshua Davis then knocked home Renteria with a single. Then in the third, Dusty Robinson walked and came around to score on a Brian Bistagne hit.
The Rascals plated a pair in the bottom of the inning. RF Jackson Slaid walked, and SS Josh Silver singled to open the at-bat. Following a passed ball, CF Curran Redal and LF Brian Hansen each hit an RBI groundout.
In the fourth frame, Michael Hur singled and scored on a double by Colin Shaw.
The Rascals took their first lead in the sixth inning. DH Danny Canela doubled, 2B Hector Crespo walked, and 1B Zach Kometani drew a base on balls to load the bases. Slaid then drove in two runs with a single, and Silver hit an RBI groundout. With two outs, Redal drove in Slaid with a single.
The Aviators tied the game 6-6 in the top of the seventh inning. Robinson coaxed a one-out walk, and Rodriguez collected another single. Robinson then scored on a single by Bistagne.
Canela answered with a solo homerun, his 10th, in the bottom of the inning to recapture the lead.
Rockford tied the game again in the ninth when Rodriguez doubled, and Trail hit an RBI single.
The Rascals walked off in the 11th inning without a hit. Hansen started the inning on second base due to the international tiebreaker rule. Following a foul out, Canela reached first on an error, and 3B Taylor Ard was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Crespo then hit a groundball through the legs of third baseman Trail, who received an error, and the Rascals won.
The Rascals used a season-high nine pitchers in Game 1. RHP Zeb Sneed (W, 3-1) faced just one batter, threw two pitches, and received the win. RHP Joe Pavlovich, LHP Stephen Frey, and RHP Victor Beriguete each made their Rascals debut. Pavlovich surrendered one run in 2.1 innings, Frey allowed one hit in 0.2 inning, and Beriguete ceded one run in 1.0 inning. RHP Zac Treece and RHP Will Schierholz each threw 0.1 inning, and RHP Derek Cape added 2.0 scoreless frames.
Payton Baskette allowed five runs, four earned, over 4.1 innings. Nick Grim (L, 0-4) was charged with one unearned runs in 0.1 inning and took the loss. Eric Cendejas and Corey Lapeze each surrendered a run in relief.
The Rascals took Game 2, a seven-inning affair, by a score of 10-0.
LHP Lucas Laster (W, 1-2) earned his first career victory by tossing a seven-inning complete game shutout. He allowed just six hits and one walk while striking out six batters.
Tony Rizzoti (L, 5-1), who own a 1.29 ERA entering play, surrendered a season-high seven runs and 10 hits. He lasted a season-low 3.0 innings and took his first loss of the year.
Slaid hit a solo homer in the second inning, his fifth, to take a 1-0 lead. 1B Marc Flores, who made his Rascals debut in Game 1, drew a two-out walk, and Silver doubled to left field. Flores scored on a wild pitch, and Redal singled home Silver. Canela then hit an RBI single, capping the Rascals' four run rally.
Crespo led off the third with his first triple of the season and scored on a sacrifice flyout by Kometani, who caught Game 2. Flores and Silver then hit consecutive doubles for another run, and Redal singled in Silver again.
With two outs in the sixth inning, Hasen, Canela, and Ard hit three consecutive singles, with Hansen scoring on Ard's hit. Slaid then singled, and Silver reached on an error in the seventh. Both men scored on a triple by Redal, his first of 2015.
Redal and Hansen each collected five total hits in the doubleheader, and Redal drove in six runs. Canela and Slaid both had four hits and a homerun, as well. Five players made their Rascals debut in the twinbill.
The Rascals are now 6-4 in doubleheader games and have swept twice. They sit just 2.5 games behind the first-place Aviators in the West Division.Â
The Rascals and Rockford Aviators play another doubleheader on Sunday, July 19 at Aviator Stadium. Game 1 will start at 1:05 p.m. CDT, and both games will last seven innings.
