Otters Sweep Florence for Sixth Straight Win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Evansville Otters (7-2) earned their second consecutive sweep and sixth straight win with an 8-4 victory over the Florence Freedom (5-4) on Sunday night at Bosse Field.

Florence went ahead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly from Cody Bishop.

Down 1-0, Evansville tied and took the lead in the second. First baseman Nik Balog scored on a sacrifice fly from infielder Cory Urquhart. A throwing error on the same play also enabled infielder Josh Allen to score the go-ahead run from second base.

Trailing by one, Florence evened up the score in the third on a bases loaded walk.

Tied at two, Evansville went ahead on a double from catcher Jaime Del Valle and added to the lead when infielder Jeff Birkofer followed with another run producing double. The extra base hit from Birkofer was his first professional hit.

Ahead 4-2, the Otters rallied for three more runs in the fifth including a two-run single from Del Valle.

Down by five, Florence surged back for two runs in the sixth.

Up 7-4, Evansville tallied another run in the seventh on an Urquhart single.

Reliever Adam Mott threw the final 3.0 innings to secure the Otters' sixth consecutive win and second straight sweep.

Starting pitcher Tyler Vail (1-0) earned the win. The right-hander yielded four runs on three hits, overcoming seven walks to receive the victory.

Del Valle was 3-for-4 with a run scored, two doubles and three runs batted in. Urquhart also recorded two hits, a run, and two runs batted in. Allen totaled three runs scored as Balog advanced his hitting streak to seven games with a two hit night.

Evansville begins a six-game roadtrip on Tuesday, May 26 at the Lake Erie Crushers. The Otters will have left-hander Efrain Nieves (1-0, 0.00 ERA) on the mound against Crushers righty Jason Wilson (0-1, 4.09 ERA). First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. CDT at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio.
