Washington Edges Normal 3-2 in Sunday Finale

Normal, IL-Washington Wild Things centerfielder Danny Poma singled home the game's winning run in the sixth inning Sunday to give the Wild Things a 3-2 victory over the Normal CornBelters at The Corn Crib. Poma, left fielder CJ Beatty, and designated hitter Edinson Rincon combined for all three RBI in the game.

The Wild Things combined for nine hits to support Washington's starter Tim Flight in his dominant performance. The right-hander threw six innings, struck out seven batters and allowed just two runs as he picked up his first victory of the season. Normal reliever Victor Beriguete suffered the loss.

Washington got on the scoreboard early in the second inning as first baseman Lee Orr advanced to second on an error as part of his fielder's choice grounder. Orr later scored on a single by Rincon, 1-0.

A sacrifice fly by Beatty in the third allowed Poma to score, who reached first base via a CornBelters miscue, and the Wild Things took a 2-0 advantage. The CornBelters evened the score, 2-2, in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Santiago Chirino and a bases-loaded bunt single by Cameron Monger.

The Wild Things broke the tie in the sixth as Poma plated the winning run with a RBI single that scored right fielder David Popkins.

Normal threatened in the ninth with two runners on but Washington reliever Matt Purnell stopped any chance of a CornBelter comeback as Purnell recorded his first save of the season.

Several Washington players had multi-hit performances in today's contest. Catcher John Fidanza and third baseman Sam Mende each had a pair of hits. Wobrock had three hits in four at-bats.

The Wild Things will have Memorial Day off before traveling to O'Fallon, Missouri to face the River City Rascals for a three game series beginning Tuesday at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
