Slammers Battle Elements to Earn Sweep

Joliet Slammers News Release
Joliet, IL - The Slammers (5-4) waited out a nearly two-hour long rain delay before finishing off the sweep against the Gateway Grizzlies (2-7), topping their division rivals 2-1.
After a scoreless first three innings, the Slammers got on the board in the fourth inning. CF Charlie White short-hoped the right field fence for a leadoff double. LF Phil Bates then drilled a single to center field to score White, giving Joliet a 1-0 lead.
David Kubiak preserved the slim advantage with a strong outing, tossing seven scoreless innings, giving up no runs on two hits and five walks, while fanning four. Joliet would add an insurance run in the eighth inning. White led of the frame with a single and moved to second on a fielding error by the 2B Jose Chavarria. After 1b Chris Serritella popped out, DH Russell Moldenhauer singled to drive in White and put the Slammers up 2-0.
The insurance run would prove to be huge, as Gateway scored in the ninth with closer Navery Moore in. SS Rolando Gomez led off with a walk and later traded places with CF Blake Brown when Brown grounded into a fielder's choice. With a runner on first, 3B Grant Buckner tagged a double to the right field gap, scoring Brown to make it a 2-1 game. With the tying run at second, Moore struck out 1B Ben Waldrip to preserve the Slammers 2-1 win. Kubiak earned the Merchants and Manufactures Bank Player of the Game honors for his performance on the mound.
Notes: The Slammers already have more wins this year (3) than they did last season (2) against their rival Grizzlies... Russell Moldenhauer has an eight game hitting streak... The Slammers are above .500 for the first time since May 25th, 2015...David Kubiak pitched his longest outing of the year...At two hours and ten minutes long, this was the shortest game of the year for the Slammers...Joliet has the second longest winning streak in the league at five games...they will play the team with the longest, Rockford on the road on Tuesday,...
