
Otters Rally Late But Fall Short 8-4

(SAUGET, Ill.)- The Evansville Otters stormed back in the late innings but the Gateway Grizzlies held on for an 8-4 victory on Thursday night.
Otters starter Kyle Barry and Grizzlies pitcher Tim Clubb threw very well over the first few innings, keeping the game scoreless into the bottom of the 4th.
There, Brandon Peters doubled home a run for the 1-0 lead and Charlie Lisk followed up with a sacrifice fly. Jason Patton also added a two-run homer to take the 4-0 advantage.
The Grizzlies added a run in the fifth inning and three more in the 7th for an 8-0 lead.
But Evansville wouldn't give up. The Otters came through with a pair of runs in the 8th inning including an RBI single from Greg Alexander.
Evansville rallied again in the ninth inning as Andre Alvarado singled home a pair of runs to cut the deficit down to four. Catcher Breck Draper continued to pitch his was into trouble as the righty loaded up the bases and bringing the tying run to the plate. Manager Phil Warren then brought in reliever Jake Shafer who struck out Derek Wiley to end the game.
The win ends a three game losing streak for Gateway and stops an Evansville three game winning streak at the same time.
The Grizzlies improve to 32-30 with the victory as Evansville is currently 22-39.
Tim Clubb (5-3) receives the win after allowing just two runs over eight innings. Kyle Barry (1-3) is the losing pitcher after giving up eight runs in six innings. Jake Shafer also picked up his fifth save of the year.
The teams meet again in the series finale on Friday night with first pitch set for 7:05 PM CDT. Right-hander Andy Wells (0-1, 6.75 ERA) will start for the Otters as Gateway will throw lefty Ricky Meinhold (1-2, 4.83).
