Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, Pa. - Starter Jeff Sonnenberg pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout and faced the minimum 27 batters to help the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, defeat the Lake Erie Crushers 3-0 Thursday night at CONSOL Energy Park.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Jon Kourie walked to lead off the inning. He then scored on a Louis Rivera two-out double to give the Wild Things a 1-0 lead.
The Wild Things added insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Kourie crushed the ball past a diving second baseman to score John Delaney and Eric Stephens to increase the lead to 3-0.
The defense was also a major factor in the victory. In the second, Delany picked a ball out of the dirt and fired it to first for the second out of the inning. Stephens got a critical out in the top of the eighth inning, diving to catch a foul line drive for the third out.
Sonnenberg faced the minimum 27 batters to pick up his third win of the season. He struck out two and didn't walk a batter in his nine innings. This is the second complete game by the Wild Things starting rotation in less than a week.
Lake Erie starter John Roberts, the league's top pitcher, gave up three runs on seven hits in 7.2 innings. He walked two and struck out four in only his second loss of the season.
The Wild Things will conclude the six-game homestand tomorrow night against the Lake Erie Crushers at 7:05 p.m. Coverage begins at 6:55 p.m. on WJPA 95.3 FM. It's Fireworks Friday. Stay after the game to enjoy a postgame fireworks display. Tickets are available at the box office, on the team Web site or by calling 866-456-WILD.
