Otters Pr - McKegg Earns Second OHL Player of the Week Award for the Season
November 29, 2010 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release
The Ontario Hockey League announced Monday morning that for the second time this season Erie Otters center Greg McKegg is the OHL Player of the Week. McKegg is the first Otter since Brad Boyes (who was honored four times in the 2001-02 season) to be awarded Player of the Week twice in the same season.
The Otters captain had perhaps the best week of his OHL career, which started with a career night on Thanksgiving against the Belleville Bulls. McKegg potted home the goal that sent 4,618 stuffed animals onto the ice at Tullio Arena and added three more to cap off a 6-0 victory. The four goals tied for the most in Otters history, and it was the first time an Otter scored four in a game since Geoff Platt in 2004.
McKegg then aided the Otters' strong start Saturday night as he collected two of the three goals in the first 5:23 of the contest against the Kitchener Rangers. McKegg would add an assist as the Otters defeated their Midwest Division rival, 7-3, which snapped the Rangers' 10-game unbeaten streak.
The St. Thomas, Ontario native then finished off the weekend with a pair of assists against the Guelph Storm Sunday afternoon, including the setup on the overtime game-winner by David Shields with 3.5 seconds to go in overtime, as the Otters extended their season-high win streak to four in the 5-4 decision.
McKegg is one of seven players in the OHL to hit the 40-point plateau and one of five to reach 20 goals this season. His contributions on the ice are carrying over to the community. Earlier in the week, Plyler Overhead Door announced the formation of Kegger's Kids, which benefits Erie Shriners Hospital for Children. McKegg's week contributed $75 towards Shriners Hospital, for a total of $300 for the season.
The Otters will venture to Kitchener Friday night to take on the Rangers at 7:30 p.m. Fans can listen to all the action on Fox Sports Radio AM 1330 The Fan or online at ottershockey.com (courtesy of the James H. Cross Company).
