October 1, 2010 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release
Despite controlling the first two periods of the game, the Erie Otters ran into bad luck as they were beaten by the Kitchener Rangers, 7-3, in Ontario Hockey League action Friday night in Kitchener.
Kitchener went on the board first with a pair of goals 1:36 apart. Andrew Crescenzi deflected a Ryan Murphy shot past Chris Festarini at 13:03 and Mike Catenacci followed up with a backhander at 14:39 to make it 2-0.
A good second effort by David Broll resulted in the Otters first goal of the night. After breaking into the zone on the right wing and firing a shot just wide, he tracked down his own rebound at the left circle and made a perfect pass to a trailing David Shields at the right circle, as Shields fired the puck home in the top shelf for his first goal of the season at 16:26.
Gabriel Landeskog, a projected top-10 pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, scored 50 seconds into the second to increase the Rangers lead back to two. Anthony Luciani put the Otters within a goal as he followed up on a rebound from a Greg McKegg breakaway at 8:51 for his third goal of the season. Jason Akeson scored with just over a minute left in the period to give the Rangers a 4-2 lead into the second intermission. The Otters outshot the Rangers, 15-8, in the second period.
The third period belonged to the Rangers, as they scored three goals to put the game out of reach. Mitch Gaulton scored a consolation goal for the Otters with a blast from the high slot on the power play for his second of the season at 10:59.
Murphy led the way for the Rangers with a five-point night (1g, 4a). McKegg collected a pair of assists for the Otters. Festarini made 27 saves in his season debut for the Otters, who outshot the Rangers 38-34.
The Otters return home Saturday for Pucks and Paws Night presented by The A.N.N.A. Shelter against the London Knights. Game time is 7:00 p.m. Any fan that donates a bag of dog or cat food, dog or cat treat or toy, cat litter, bleach or laundry soap receives a free ticket to another home game in October. The A.N.N.A. Shelter will also debut their 2011 Erie Otters/A.N.N.A. Shelter calendar, which will be on sale at the game.
