Majors Steam Roll Defending Champs

Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Mississauga, ON- The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors opened their home schedule with a convincing 5-1 victory over the defending OHL and MasterCard Memorial Cup Champions the Windsor Spitfires tonight at the Hershey Centre. The Majors improve their record to 2-0-0-0 on the season.

Tonight's game was similar to the Majors season opener last week in Kingston where they killed off penalties in the first and did their damage in the second period. The Spitfires had a couple power play opportunities in the first period but the Majors effectively killed off the advantages. Late in the period the Majors went on the power play after Gregg Sutch was dragged down behind the net. With just one second remaining on the clock Devante Smith-Pelly scored his first goal of the season to put the Majors ahead 1-0. Smith-Pelly came charging in and took a pass from Justin Shugg and beat Spitfires' goaltender Jack Campbell through the five-hole. Mississauga took the lead into the first intermission.

Windsor went on their third power play and were able to capitalize just under four minutes into the second period. Newly appointed Captain Ryan Ellis fired his shot past JP Anderson to tie the game at 1-1. That would be the closest Windsor would come as Mississauga scored four goals in a span of 13 minutes to pull away to a 5-1 lead. Alex Cord put the Majors ahead at 4:25 when he took the puck from the Majors end all the way up ice and beat Campbell with a quick shot over his shoulder. A minute later Smith-Pelly scored his second goal of the game on the power play after Stuart Percy's initial shot was saved. Riley Brace jumped onto the loose puck and passed to Smith-Pelly, who was waiting at the side of the goal. Just over three minutes later Casey Cizikas made it 4-1 after the Majors jumped out to a three-on-one rush and Cizikas deaked around a sprawling Campbell and put it in the open net. In the closing minutes Brett Flemming made it 5-1 after taking a cross ice pass from Justin Shugg to beat Campbell and take the four goal cushion into the intermission.

The third period provided nothing to the score line but Rob Flick and Kyle Tarini fought twice in the final twenty minutes. JP Anderson made 18 saves and picked up the win for the Majors. Jack Campbell and Josh Malecki combined for 26 saves. Campbell takes the loss for Windsor. The Majors will head on the road and play the Belleville Bulls tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, Mississauga will travel to Ottawa to face the 67's at 2:00 p.m. Ticket packages for the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup are still on sale.
