Saginaw Spirit News Release
The Saginaw Spirit defeated division rivals the Plymouth Whalers by a score of 3-2 Friday night, taking the first game of the season series between the two teams. Brandon Saad earned the game's first star honors with two points, a goal and an assist. Saginaw's record stands at 3-1-0-0 with 6 points, with the Spirit entering their Saturday night home game against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds riding a three game win streak.
Plymouth's Rickard Rakell opened scoring for the Whalers with a goal :39 seconds into the second frame, giving them a 1-0 lead; the goal was unassisted. The Spirit were quick to answer however, with two power play goals giving the Spirit the lead exiting the second period. Center Brandon Saad tallied his third goal of the season at the 5:58 mark courtesy of center Vince Trocheck and winger Jordan Szwarz. Trocheck tallied his second point of the night at the 18:16 mark, a team leading fourth of the season, with assists from defenseman Peter Hermenegildo and Saad earning the helpers.
The two teams battled through the third period and in the final seconds the Whalers pulled netminder Scott Wedgewood for an extra attacker. Winger Josh Shalla took advantage of the situation to notch an empty net goal at 18:46, a goal that proved to be even more important when a late Whalers push moved the score to 3-2. Rakell scored an unassisted goal, his second of the night, at the 19:27 mark, but despite the effort the Spirit took home the win.
Spirit goalie Tadeas Galansky notched 26 saves on 28 shots in his season debut, while Plymouth's Wedgewood posted 26 saves on 28 shots.
