Otters Edged by Sliders

Evansville Otters News Release

Ypsilanti, MI - The Otters were denied their second series sweep of the season Thursday night, as the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti ended a four game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over Evansville.

The Sliders opened the scoring in the second inning when Bryan Bonner drove in Ryan Kennedy from third base with a ground out to shortstop.

The Otters took the lead in the fifth inning on Andre Liscinsky's first professional home run, a two-run shot that put the Otters ahead 2-1.

Midwest would answer with a long ball of their own, as Robbie Knapp's two-run homer to left put the Slider's back on top 3-2.

Evansville tied the game at 3-3 in the eighth inning on Matt Schneider's two-out RBI single, his seventh RBI in his last eight games.

Otters' reliever Justin Smith entered the game in the bottom of the inning and surrendered back-to-back two-out RBI singles to Bonner and Lee Rubin that put the Sliders up 5-3.

Evansville put runners on first and third with one out against Sliders' closer Ashbin Asjes, but Asjes struck out Greg Alexander and got Luke Hetherington to pop out to end the game.

Both starting pitchers were impressive but did not factor in to the decision. The Otters' Kyle Dahman surrendered three runs in seven innings, while Jeff Fischer lasted 7 1/3 innings, also giving up three runs. Midwest reliever Earl Oakes (3-1) picked up the win after finishing out the eighth inning. Justin Smith (3-4) took the loss, allowing two runs in one inning of work. Asjes picked up his eleventh save of the year.

The Otters (25-50) finished their season-high nine game road trip 3-6. They now head back home to Bosse Field to begin a three game series with the Lake Erie Crushers. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 7:05pm CDT.
