Otters Defeat Grizzlies in 10 Innings

SAUGET, Ill. - The Evansville Otters scored two runs in the 10th inning and held on for a 10-8 win against the Gateway Grizzlies at GCS Ballpark Friday night.

The Otters (35-22) picked up the win despite allowing four runs in the ninth inning to force extra innings. With two outs and trailing 8-4, Gateway outfielder TJ Bennett cleared the bases on a triple and Madison Beaird followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 8-8.

Evansville jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, scoring a run in the third inning on a John Schultz solo home run and three runs in the fourth inning on a J.R. Higley three-run home run.

A Michael Johnson three-run home run in the fifth inning brought the score to 4-3.

Johnson finished 3-for-6 with a single, double and home run.

Cory Urquhart drove in a run on double in the sixth inning and Evansville tacked on two more in the seventh inning on a Higley double and a Gateway error.

The Otters made the score 8-3 on an Urquhart solo home run in the top of the eighth and the Grizzlies came within four runs on a Ben Waldrip solo home run in the bottom of the eighth.

The loss moved the Grizzlies (37-23) into second place in the West Division. Gateway now trails River City by a half game.

Gateway and Evansville conclude their series Saturday night at GCS Ballpark. Right-hander Tyler Thompson (3-1) will make the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05.
