Miners Tripped Up By Washington

Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners saw the visiting Washington Wild Things take the lead in the second inning and pile on later in the contest in an 8-2 loss at Rent One Park to even the three-game series at 1-1.

After an RBI groundout and triple against Tyler Lavigne (4-5) in the second inning gave Washington the lead, C.J. Beatty went deep for a two-run shot that made the score 4-0 in the next inning. Phil Butler smacked a solo homer to left that cut the deficit to 4-1 in the bottom of the third, and that's the way the score would remain until the sixth.

Will Beckwith would hit a one-out, two-run homer that inning to widen the gap to 6-1 and chase Lavigne from the game. Against Steve Hagen, who made his pro debut with the Miners tonight, Washington got two more runs, but were held off the board by Hagen in the final two innings of play.

The Miners got another run in the eighth when Jon Eisen looped a single to left that Beatty misplayed, allowing Tyler Booth to hustle home all the way from first, but the Miners dropped the middle game of the series against the Wild Things. Butler had two hits in the contest to pace the Miners offensively.

The rubber match is set for tomorrow afternoon at 4:05 p.m. at Rent One Park, with Rick Teasley pitching against Shawn Blackwell in a rematch of the finale of the series between the two teams at Washington from July 2nd-3rd.
