River City Rascals News Release
After falling behind to the Frontier Greys 8-1 early on, River City made an impressive comeback effort after starter Kyle Brady made it through only 2.2, but unfortunately, the Rascals ultimately fell short, losing by a final score of 8-5.
Following a road trip in which River City went 4-3, the Rascals returned to T.R. Hughes Ballpark for game one of a nine-game home stand. Brook sent 6'9" righty Kyle Brady to the mound to face his former team, the Frontier Greys, in his third professional start. On the flip side, Frontier sent their ace Clint Wright to the mound to try and beat the Rascals for a second time this season.
In the top of the first, Kyle Brady exhibited his dominance early on by retiring the batters 1-2-3. The red hot Rascals offense continued raking in the bottom of the first as they put a run on the board thanks to a two-out RBI single by first-baseman Brian McConkey. Brady would then appreciate the run support by coming back out to the hill to once again set down the Greys hitters 1-2-3.
The Greys struck second however, as second-baseman Zach Tanner led off the top of the third with a solo shot home run to tie the ballgame at one apiece. The Frontier bats then continued to hit by stringing together three straight knocks to take a 2-1 lead on an RBI single by centerfielder Chris Ellison. After a near injury on a pitch by Kyle Brady, the Greys managed to load the bases and add two more insurance runs on a fielder's choice groundout and another RBI single- this one courtesy of rightfielder Jon Minucci.
Following Frontier's fourth run in the top of the third, starter Kyle Brady was pulled after throwing 2.2 innings, as he gave way to reliever Ethan Carter who allowed six more runs to score on a wild pitch and RBI knocks by Jon Minucci, Zach Tanner, Greg Bachman, and Chase Tucker, to make it 8-1 Greys after two and a half. Brady therefore was saddled with seven earned runs on five hits while striking out three and walking one.
The Rascals then made a dent of their own in the bottom of the seventh, as they managed to score four more to make it a three-run game after seven. The first run came across the plate on a wild pitch, allowing Brian Hansen to score from third base. The second run was then plated on a two-out RBI single by Saxon Butler before two more would be plated on a huge error by rightfielder Jon Minucci who dropped a can-of-corn fly ball with two outs and two runners aboard. After seven innings, River City had cut the deficit to three and forced the removal of the starter Clint Wright- who made it through 6.2, allowing five runs- three earned- on five hits while striking out six and walking three.
Another big player to note in the ballgame was relief pitcher Ethan Carter, who pitched 4.1 innings in his debut off the 14-day Injured Reserve, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out two and walking none. Carter's effort enabled River City to hang around in the ballgame and cut the deficit to three after seven.
Then, with the Rascals trailing by three heading into the bottom of the ninth, setup man Jarrett Leverett stayed on the mound to try and record a six out save. While the tying run did come to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Leverett was able to get Ryan Deitrich swinging to end the game by a final score of 8-5.
The win in the ballgame therefore, went to the Greys starter Clint Wright- his fifth of the season- with the loss going to Rascals starter Kyle Brady. The nine-game home stand continues tomorrow night with game two of the series against the Frontier Greys. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm CT and tickets can be purchased by visiting www.rivercityrascals.com or by calling (636)-240-BATS.
