
Otters Continue Sliders' Slide

August 12, 2009, Ypsilanti, MI - The Otters defeated the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti 3-1 Wednesday night behind a strong effort from starting pitcher Steven Brock.
Brock (1-1) allowed only one unearned run in 6 1/3 innings while striking out three and walking two. Brock has yet to allow an earned run now in 16 1/3 innings.
Nick Utley came on in relief and worked out of two jams. The Sliders had runners on second and third with one out in the seventh inning and runners on first and third with no one out in the eighth but came up empty both times. Ben Paxton set the Sliders down in order in the ninth for his second save of the year.
The Otters scored in the second inning when Frank Meade led off with a double and scored on a Marcus Rose single. They pushed across another run in the third when Kenny Gilbert led off with a double and scored on Meade's single. The Otters final tally came when Gilbert singled in Rose from third with two outs in the seventh inning. Meade and Gilbert both had three hits on the night.
Nolan Shaffer (3-3) absorbed the loss for Midwest despite a quality start. He allowed two earned runs in six innings while striking out five and walking three. The Sliders have now lost six of seven. The Otters (25-49) will go for the sweep Thursday at 6:05pm CDT.
