Washington Wild Things News Release
Loves Park, Ill-The Washington Wild Things, (35-39) presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, took the second game of the series against the Rockford Riverhawks by the score of 5-4 at Road Ranger Stadium.
Washington got the early lead in the second when Matt Sutton had a steal of home after a walk to Alan Robbins to give Washington a 1-0 lead. The lead remained the same going into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Riverhawks threatened for the first time against Groh by loading the bases. After a strikeout and a groundout, Groh showed why he earns a paycheck pitching by getting out of the inning without surrendering a run.
Looking to give his pitcher some support, Chris Sidick led off the sixth inning with a towering shot (7) over the wall to give some breathing room at 2-0. Looking to rally his troops, Rockford's Jason James answered with a solo shot of his own to put them on the board 2-1. Groh looked like he was going to escape another inning with limited damage when Doug Sanders hit a two-run double over the head of Sidick to give the Riverhawks a 3-2 lead.
Being done 4-2 in the seventh, Brett Grandstrand ended his 0-24 hitless streak at the plate by scoring Robbins with an RBI double getting the score a one run deficit, 4-3. Not to be outdone, Michael Parker pushed his hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI triple scoring Grandstrand and tying the game at 4-4. Parker would later score on a wild pitch giving Washington the 5-4 lead to keep.
Wild Things starter Groh pitched five and two thirds innings receiving a no decision for the Wild Things. Groh gave up four runs while surrendering seven hits and striking out three.
The Wild Things look to sweep Rockford Thursday night as they wrap up their three game series. Broadcast on WJPA 95.3 FM begins at 7:55 with the first pitch coming at 8:05.
