Florence Y'alls News Release
CRESTWOOD, IL - Justin Pickett might just need to stay at first base as he went deep twice to carry the Florence Freedom to a 5-2 win Wednesday night at Standard Bank Stadium against the Windy City Thunderbolts.
Pickett went 0-4 in game one of the series Tuesday night as the catcher with four strikeouts. Coming in to Wednesday's game, Pickett was 12-37 (.324) when playing first base. The all-star got the start at first Wednesday night and hit his fifth and sixth home runs at the position, doing it in only his 40th and 41st at-bat while over there.
Preston Vancil dominated the Thunderbolts' bats in his first road start as a professional. Vancil (4-1) struck out eight and allowed only four hits and one run in eight innings of work.
Jay Johnson was the man on base for both of Pickett's sixth and eighth inning blasts. Pickett second homer in the eighth his 20th on the season and chased Thunderbolt starter Dustin Pease (8-6) from the game.
Brad Hough later singled in the eighth against Justin Lilly and after stealing second and going to third on a throwing error, Hough scored on Billy Mottram sacrifice fly to make it 5-1 Florence.
Jonathan Miller tossed the ninth and gave up one run on two hits. Miller faced Guillermo Martinez who was representing the tying run and got him to fly out to right to end the late threat.
Florence (34-39) snapped a seven game road losing streak with the win. Windy City lost for the just tenth time all season at home. The two square off in the rubber match on Thursday night at 8:05 p.m. Eastern. Follow the Freedom while they are on the road on Classic Country 106.7 FM WNKR or www.1067WNKR.com.
