Beach Bums Fall in a Close One

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - David Dinelli carried a no-hitter into the seventh for the Traverse City Beach Bums, but the Gateway Grizzlies rallied to score a 3-2 win at Wuerfel Park on Wednesday night.

Dinelli retired the first 14 hitters of the game before walking Brandon Johnson with two outs in the fifth. His teammates gave him a 2-0 lead to work with thanks to John Alonso. Alonso homered the opposite way to right on a 1-0 pitch from Gateway starter Christian Castorri with two outs in the fourth.

Alonso did it again in the sixth. Andrew Franco drew a leadoff walk was sacrificed to second and scored on a single through the left side by Alonso.

Gateway finally solved Dinelli in the seventh, chasing him from the game by scoring three times to hand him the loss. Dinelli retired the leadoff man before Charlie Lisk singled to right to break up the no-hit bid. Jareck West followed with a double to put runners at second and third before Brandon Johnson walked.

B.J. Hagen entered and struck out Danny Morrow for the second out. Chad Rothford came off the bench to pinch hit for Gateway and the switch-hitter batted lefty against Shawn Joy, who is also lefty. Rotheford put a 2-0 pitch into center to score two runs and tie the game. Peter Tountas singled on the very next pitch to score Johnson and put Gateway ahead.

David Dinelli suffered the defeat despite throwing a career high 6.1 innings and struck out seven, allowing three runs to go with two walks and a hit batsman. The Beach Bums had opportunities to tie the game, putting runners in scoring position in the seventh, eighth, and ninth, but Joel Boeschen pitched the ninth to post the save for Gateway.

The Beach Bums outhit Gateway 7-5 in the contest. John Alonso finished with three hits for Traverse City including a homer and a double while Brad Miller added a pair as well.

Traverse City will conclude the series with the Grizzlies tomorrow night on Throwback Night at Wuerfel Park. RHP Jason Kiley (4-8, 5.49) takes the ball for the Beach Bums in the 7:05pm rubber contest. Gateway will counter with LHP Jamie Arneson (5-0, 3.21).
