Billings Mustangs News Release
MISSOULA, Montana - The Billings Mustangs (4-10) fell in their series opener, 7-4 to the Missoula Osprey (8-6) at Ogren Park Allegiance Field on Saturday to drop to six games below .500 for the first time this season.
After their longest game of the season by innings on Friday night at 10 innings, the Mustangs experienced their longest contest of the year in time, experiencing a 51 minute delay during the seventh.
Missoula took the first lead of the night in the bottom of the second on a Zack Shannon solo homerun, his second of the year. Shannon finished the evening 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Osprey then extended their lead in the fifth after a leadoff single from David Sanchez. He was sacrificed in on Brandon Leyton's fly to left.
Billings got their first run of the night in the sixth off Missoula starter Edgar Martinez (3-0) who had a no-hitter through five frames. Brandt Stallings led off the sixth with a single lined up the middle. After being replaced on an error reach by Francis Azcona, he would score when Mariel Bautista doubled down the line in left. It was Bautista's fourth double of the season, tying him for most on the team.
Mustangs starter Ricardo Smith (0-3) made it into the sixth inning before being removed from the game. He would allow four runs on eight hits while striking out three.
The Osprey spread their lead to five after a four-run bottom of the sixth. They needed just one hit in the inning, aided by two walks, an error and two wild pitches to plate four and seal the win.
The Mustangs made a lade surge with three runs on five consecutive hits in the eighth with two outs, but it wouldn't be enough. Drew Mount delivered a two-RBI double to push him into the Pioneer League with 12 RBI on the year. Urwin Juaquin singled him in to cap the scoring.
The Mustangs and Osprey will now play a double-header on Sunday to make up a postponement from June 17th in Billings. First pitch in the twin bill from Ogren Park Allegiance field is set for 5:05 p.m.
