Helena Brewers News Release
Great Falls, MT - Tied for first with Great Falls coming into Saturday's doubleheader, the Helena Brewers had an opportunity to take command of the division with a sweep. Instead they got swept, as Great Falls hit five home runs, beating Helena 11-7 and 8-6. The Brewers, who committed four errors in each game, now sit two games behind the Voyagers for first place in the division.
Game 1
Chad McClanahan gave the Brewers a quick 1-0 lead in the first with a solo homer, but it was short lived. The Voyagers scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, with two errors making all four runs unearned. The first scored on a throwing error from Yeison Coca, and the next three scored on RBIs from Corey Zangari, Amado Nunez, and Jimmy Galusky.
Ramon Beltre hit a two run homer in the second to extend the lead to 6-1, but after Helena got three back in the top of the third on a David Fry three run homer, Adam McGinnis and Jay Estes hit back to back homers against reliever Jenri Montas, putting the Brewers back in a five run hole. It marked the first time in 2018 in which the Brewers allowed multiple home runs in a game.
Down 11-7, Helena got the tying run on deck with one out in the seventh, but Nick Johnson, who came on in relief of Wyatt Burns (W, 1-0), got the next two to end the inning. Johnson allowed a pair of one out hits in the ninth, but then struck out the final two, ending the game.
Blake Lillis lasted just two innings, allowing six runs (two earned). It was his shortest outing of the season. In defeat, Fry and McClanahan combined to go4-7 with five RBI.
Game 2
The Brewers jumped out to a quick lead thanks to a solo homer from Jean Carmona and a double steal, leading 2-0 after half an inning. In the bottom of the first, an error kept the inning alive for Alex Destino, who doubled home a run.
Helena extended their lead in the second as Jesus Lujano drove home Jose Sibrian with a single, but a critical moment came with a 3-1 lead in the third. The Brewers loaded the bases with one out against Matt Portland, but the lefty fanned Nick Egnatuk and Jose Sibrian to keep the Crew off the board in the inning.
In the fourth inning though, it all fell apart for Helena. Brewers starter Victor Castaneda has retired seven straight going into the fourth, and got a pop up from Corey Zangari in foul territory. However, Sibrian dropped it, and Zangari then singled to right, Castaneda got the next two, but Gunnar Troutwine singled, getting the tying run on base. Maiker Feliz then sent a blast to deep left center field, his second homer of the year, giving Great Falls the 4-3 lead.
In the fifth, another error put a runner on against Castaneda, and Zangari then with one out hit a bomb to deep right center, his first homer, to extend the lead to 6-3. Castaneda went five innings and allowed six runs, but only one run was earned.
An error on Great Falls came home on a Jesus Lujano double in the sixth, getting the deficit to within two, but the Voyagers got two in the sixth, putting the game on ice. Helena committed four errors in the game, to go along with the four errors in the first game of the twin bill.
Tomorrow the Brewers finish their road trip against Great Falls with a 4:00 PM start. Scott Sunitsch takes the ball for Helena, opposed by Chris Comito for Great Falls.
