June 3, 2018 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - David Parkinson and Addison Russ combined on Lakewood's second straight shutout while Jhailyn Ortiz broke a scoreless tie in the eighth as Lakewood topped Hickory 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Park.
Lakewood (33-23) took two of three in the series from Hickory (20-31) and the BlueClaws got back to 10 games over .500 for the second time this year.
With the game scoreless in the eighth inning, Ortiz put the BlueClaws up 1-0 on a two-out RBI single. He lined a Sal Mendez (3-4) 1-2 pitch into left field to bring home Dalton Guthrie with the go-ahead run. Lakewood added another on a Hickory error to take a 2-0 lead.
Russ (5-0), who threw the eighth, threw a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his fifth win of the year while lowering his ERA to 0.98.
Lakewood starter David Parkinson threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. He matched his career high with nine strikeouts. Parkinson became the fourth BlueClaws starter in the last five days (Will Stewart, Kyle Young, and Damon Jones the others) to throw at least seven innings. Parkinson lowered his ERA to 1.34.
The BlueClaws have now thrown back to back shutouts for the first time this year. They threw two straight shutouts on September 2nd & 3rd last year against Kannapolis and in the final three games of the 2016 season. This year, Lakewood had thrown 12 shutouts, most in the league. BlueClaws pitchers lead the league with a team ERA of 2.56.
Crawdads starter Tyree Thompson matched Parkinson zero for zero, coming out after six scoreless innings before Lakewood won the game off Mendez.
Jake Scheiner, Dalton Guthrie and Colby Fitch all had two hits for Lakewood.
The BlueClaws are off Monday and send RHP Ramon Rosso (2-1) to the mound in Hagerstown on Tuesday.
