Charleston Bats Explode in Continued Game One, Fall in Extras in Latter Contest

Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, S.C. -  Right fielder Steven Sensley hit his seventh home run and ripped a two-run double as the Charleston RiverDogs rolled past the Delmarva Shorebirds, 12-2, in the continuance of Saturday's suspended contest, but Delmarva redeemed itself with a 5-4 extra innings victory in the Sunday series finale which welcomed 4,913 to Riley Park.

Sensley clobbered a 1-0 pitch from lefty DL Hall (0-4) over the right field wall for a solo home run, giving the RiverDogs (26-29) a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning of game one. All seven of the Louisiana native's round-trippers have been solo shots. The outfielder fell a triple shy of the cycle, placing a bunt single and pulling a double down the right field line to score Oswaldo Cabrera and Dermis Garcia in the seventh. The lefty slugger now has five of the 14 home runs hit at The Joe this season, the fewest long balls hit at a South Atlantic League ballpark this season.

Southpaw Dalton Lehnen (4-3) limited the Shorebirds (30-24) in his six innings of one run baseball, striking out four, but got all the help he needed as all nine Charleston hitters shared the team's 17 hits and eight of nine Dogs reached at least twice.

Catcher Jason Lopez had a two-run double in the second, with all 10 other runs coming in the sixth through eighth innings. The 12 runs and 17 hits were both season-highs for a RiverDogs offense that ranked last in the league in scoring entering play.

Charleston trailed for nearly seven innings of game two but an RBI double from first baseman Miguel Flames to score Leonardo Molina tied the game at 2-2 and sent it to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Delmarva scored three runs off righty Chad Martin (2-1). The Maryland native threw a scoreless seventh and had not allowed an earned run all season until the eighth. With the three runs (two earned) on his line, Martin now has an 0.84 ERA.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Dogs rallied for a pair of runs, including a bases-loaded sacrifice fly from left fielder Pablo Olivares, bringing home shortstop Wilkerman Garcia. Third baseman Chris Hess delivered an RBI knock to score second baseman Oswaldo Cabrera. With the tying and winning runs aboard, Flames grounded out to end the ballgame.

Flames impressed in his RiverDogs debut on Sunday going 4-for-7 with two RBI and a run in the doubleheader. The 20-year-old was called up from Extended Spring Training before Friday's series opener.

Game one marked the Dogs largest margin of victory this season, having not won a game by more than eight runs previously. Game two of the twin bill marks Charleston's league-high 27th one-run contest. The RiverDogs are 12-15 in such games, including a 2-3 mark in single tally games in their six-game homestand.

Ballpark Fun

Sunday was the second day of Larry Doby weekend, honoring the first African-American player in the American League and other African-American pioneers in baseball. There was also a live organist behind home plate, bringing a nostalgic sound to the ballpark on the historic weekend. Additionally, it was a Holy City Sunday where kids ate free and could run the bases postgame if they stuck around for all 15 1/2 innings.
