Ontario Steals Win From Idaho In Shootout, 3-2

BOISE, Idaho - The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings, defeated the Idaho Steelheads in the shootout, 3-2, on Wednesday evening at Qwest Arena. The first meeting between the clubs this season saw 2,658 fans in the stands. Shawn Germain scored his first goal of the season and the game-tying goal with only 1:55 remaining in regulation. Peter Lenes netted the game winner for the Reign in the shootout.
Rookie left wing Luke Gazdic, who the NHL Dallas Stars reassigned to Idaho from the AHL Texas Stars on Wednesday, scored the first goal of the game in his first appearance with the club at 3:43 in the opening period.
Gazdic registered an assist on left wing John Swanson's goal at 19:38 that put Idaho up 2-0 over Ontario. Left wing Evan Barlow threw a pass off the boards up ahead to Swanson, who put the puck up and over Reign net minder Curtis Darling.
Steelheads goaltender Rejean Beauchemin kept the Reign off the scoreboard until only 4:20 remained in regulation. Forward Greg Hogeboom, who currently leads the team in points with 24, scored his 14th goal of the season with assists from defensemen Shawn Germain and David Walker.
With only 1:55 left on the clock, Shawn Germain scored his first goal and tenth point of the season and tied the game at two. Center Tim Kraus picked up the assist on Germain's wrister from the high point that shot through traffic and past Beauchemin into the net. The late Reign goal was enough to send the game into overtime, but neither team was able to break the tie in the five-minute session, forcing a shootout. Only left wing Peter Lenes put a shot over the goal line in the shootout, taking the win for Ontario with a final score of Reign 3, Steelheads 2.
