Soo Greyhounds News Release

With the 38th overall pick in today's CHL Import Draft, the Soo Greyhounds selected EGOR OMELYANENKO from the Moscow Spartak Russian Under 17 team.

"We are very pleased to select Egor today. Obviously drafting later in the draft limits your player pool, but we know Egor wants to come to North America and play in the CHL" began Hounds GM Dave Torrie.

He went on to confirm the newest Hounds attendance at the Hounds training camp later this summer.

"Traditionally it is very difficult to get much information or commitments from Russian players, but Egor's agent has confirmed his intentions are to come to Sault Ste. Marie for the 2010/11 season."

The 6'0", 175lb winger recently competed at the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge in Timmins, Ontario where he had 1 goal in 4 games played for a Russian squad that finished 4th in the tournament.

"I had the opportunity to watch the Russian U17 team twice while at the tournament in Timmins and Egor was a young player with good size, skates well and showed some good offensive skills" said Torrie.

"Obviously there will be various challenges for Egor to overcome if he is going to be successful in the OHL, such as language, culture, food and especially the style of play. He is a very young European prospect that is excited about attempting this challenge and with some support and patience on our side, we feel he can contribute and help our team be successful in the future" stated Torrie.

The newest Hound will be one of over 50 players expected at the team's training camp in early September.

"Although we have limited viewings and information on Egor, his agent has some history of bringing some good, young Russian players over to North America. His agent assures us that Egor is excited about coming to North America to pursue his dream of playing in the NHL" concluded the Hounds GM.

The Greyhounds will now "pass" on their next pick in the 2nd round, 98th overall.
