OFFENSE TAKES CENTER STAGE IN WEEK 9
The Fort Wayne Freedom, United Indoor Football's only undefeated team, opened Week 9 of the 2005 season by entertaining the Peoria Rough Riders in a Midwest Division match-up on Friday, May 13, in Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The Freedom lived up to the challenge, posting a 52-32 victory over the Rough Riders in front of a crowd of 7,022. Fort Wayne led 14-6 after the first quarter, stretched the lead to 38-26 at halftime, and allowed just one score in the second half. The Freedom defense allowed just 140 yards of offense, recovered one fumble, sacked Peoria quarterback Walter Church three times, and picked off three of Church's passes. Fort Wayne wide receiver Jeremy Dutcher, last week's UIF Offensive Player of the Week, made a strong case to repeat the honor with four touchdowns on seven catches for 135 yards. Freedom quarterback Bryan White was 18-27 for 220 yards with five touchdowns. White was intercepted once, and it was costly. Rough Rider defensive back Larry Thompson picked off White and returned it 19 yards for a touchdown. Fort Wayne receiver Luther Stroder caught four passes for 40 yards and a touchdown, while running back Rocky Harvey rushed 11 times for 66 yards, reaching the end zone once. The Freedom opened up the scoring when Carlos Smith returned an interception of Church 33 yards to the end zone. Church struggled, throwing for 86 yards and two touchdowns, with three interceptions. Peoria running back Thunder Collins scored twice, once on a 33-yard pass from Church in the first quarter and on a three-yards run in the third quarter. That third quarter score turned out to be the only points for the Rough Riders in the second half. Collins recorded 17 carries for 66 yards with two catches for 44 yards. Church reached the end zone on a three-yard scamper in the second quarter. Peoria and Fort Wayne will not have to wait long for a re-match, as the Rough Riders will host the Freedom in Week 10 on May 28 in Carver Arena. Head Coach Matt Land and the Freedom improved to 7-0 on the year, while the loss dropped the Rough Riders and Head Coach Bruce Cowdrey to 2-5 on the season.
On Saturday, the Omaha Beef avenged a 54-51 loss to Sioux City on April 9 by turning back the host Bandits 52-42 in the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena. The North Division and Interstate 29 adversaries played in front of 4,175 enthusiastic fans. The Beef featured a strong defense and running game as they handed the Bandits their second straight defeat. Sioux City was limited to just 177 yards of net offense and the Beef recorded two sacks of Bandit quarterback Jarrod DeGeorgia. DeGeorgia completed a 36-yard touchdown pass to Dave Perrigo a minute and a half into the contest, but the Beef answered with two touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, DeGeorgia connected with wide receiver Johnny Ostermeyer for a 26-yard touchdown, but the Beef again answered with a touchdown and field goal to take a 24-14 lead to the locker room. Omaha held the Bandits scoreless in the third quarter while adding 14 points in each of the third and forth quarters. The Bandits scored 28 points in the forth quarter, but DeGeorgia was intercepted by Omaha's Johnson Lawson to seal a first-ever Beef victory in Sioux City. DeGeorgia was 10-21 passing for 121 yards with five touchdowns for the Bandits and Head Coach Jose Jefferson. Sioux City stellar running back Fred Jackson was limited to 60 yards on 13 carries by the Beef defense, although he did manage to score a touchdown on a 58-yard kick-off return at the beginning of the forth quarter. Bandit receiver Ken Horton scored twice on four catches for 21 yards, and Perrigo added two touchdowns on two catches for 40 yards. Ostermeyer gained 52 yards on three catches with a touchdown. Omaha quarterback John McMenamin threw just four passes for 83 yards, but he made them count as they all went for touchdowns. Four receivers were on the end of McMenamin's passes, including James Johnson (18-yards), Steve Lovell (seven yards), Jason Mitchell (32 yards), and Neuby Ras (26 yards). Beef running back Quincy Wright scored twice on nine carries for 72 yards, and Abrian Stovall reached the end zone on one of his two carries. Kicker Ted Retzlaff added a 28-yard field goal for the Beef just before halftime. Omaha and Head Coach Robert Fuller improved to 4-3 on the year, while North Division leader Sioux City fell to 6-2.
In a South Division battle on Saturday, Evansville Bluecats defeated the visiting Tennessee Valley Raptors 48-24 in Roberts Stadium as they set a franchise record for wins in front of 2,785 home fans. The Bluecats led 9-0 after one quarter and stretched the lead to 19-6 at halftime to coast to the victory. Raptor kicker Steven Lee scored all six of Tennessee Valley's first-half points with field goals of 35 and 29 yards in the second quarter. The Evansville defense held the Raptors scoreless for the third quarter, and Tennessee Valley added 18 points in the forth quarter. The Bluecats added 14 points in the third quarter and 15 points in the forth. Tennessee Valley was held to 126 yards of net offense and Evansville recorded two quarterback sacks. Evansville quarterback Ramon Robinson was 15-25 passing for 188 yards with three touchdowns, all to different receivers. Bluecats wide receiver Byron Curtis caught six passes from Robinson for 79 yards and a touchdown, while receivers Sean Bennett and Gerald Clark each reached the end zone once on four catches for 52. Bennett also added a touchdown on a one-yard carry. Evansville running back Otis Shannon scored a touchdown on 11 carries for 45 yards, and Dale Jennings added a touchdown on 12 carries for 43 yards. Quarterback Chris Gunn carried the Raptors, scoring three touchdowns on seven carries for 40 yards. Gunn reached the end zone on forth-quarter rushes of one, 13, and five yards. Evansville also defeated the Raptors 53-51 in the opening week of the season in Evansville, Indiana. The Bluecats of Head Coach Ollie Guidry lead the South Division as they improved to 5-2, while the Raptors and Head Coach Dick Adams fell to 2-5 on the season. All five Bluecat wins have been at home, and all five Raptor losses have occurred on the road.
The Lexington Horsemen improved to 5-3 in 2005 with a 75-13 victory over the visiting Tupelo FireAnts in a South Division match-up on Sunday in Rupp Arena. This was a re-match from the first week of the season as the Horsemen defeated the FireAnts 49-37 on March 19 in Tupelo. The Horsemen led 34-0 at halftime and the defense held off the FireAnts in the second half. Tupelo managed just 95 yards of net offense and fell victim to five turnovers, including a lost fumble and four interceptions. Tupelo wide receiver Adrian Cockfield scored once on six carries for 49 yards, while fellow wide receiver Chris Edwards reached the end zone once on two carries for nine yards. Wide receiver Laquonne Holden recorded nine catches for 65 for the FireAnts. Tupelo's rushing game struggled, as they had a net loss of two yards for the contest. Lexington quarterback Dusty Bonner was 14-18 passing for 108 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Horsemen running back Derek Homer scored three times on eight carries for 73 yards, and wide receiver Harry Lewis also scored three times on six catches for 51 yards. Lewis added a rushing touchdown on two carries. Running back Randy Bell reached the end zone once on eight carries for 11 yards for the Horsemen. Lexington defensive back Anthony "Champ" Kelly logged three interceptions, a UIF single-game record. The 75 points scored by the Horsemen is also a single-game record. The Horsemen and Head Coach Bob Sphire improved to 5-3 on the year, while the FireAnts and Head Coach John Fourcade fell to 2-6 on the season.
In Rapid City, South Dakota, the Sioux Falls Storm turned back the Black Hills Red Dogs 58-30 in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center/Dan Barnett Arena. It was the fifth straight road win for the Storm, while the Red Dogs suffered their eighth straight loss. The Storm took a 14-3 lead after the first quarter and increased it to 31-17 at halftime. The Storm defense limited the Red Dogs to 13 points in the second half. Sioux Falls quarterback Terrance Bryant returned to the lineup after missing a game last week due to a concussion and was 19-25 passing for 212 yards with three touchdowns. Storm running back James Jones scored three touchdowns on nine carries for 63 yards and added a touchdown reception on four catches for 48 yards. Running back Marques Smith rushed 12 times for 93 yards with two touchdowns for the Storm. Sioux Falls wide receiver Casey Veenhoff reached the end zone once on six catches for 71 yards. WEEK 9 PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK AWARDS
Big men get group award and "The Champ" gets defensive honors. United Indoor Football is proud to announce Players-of-the-Week awards for Week 9 of the 2005 season. Weekly awards are presented in three categories: Offense, Defense and Special Teams.
Week 9 Offensive Player(s) of the Week weighs in at 985lbs. That happens to be the combined weight of the Omaha Beef's offensive line. The Beef line beat out last week's offensive player of the week, Ft. Wayne wide receiver Jeremy Dutcher, for the week 9 award. Ductcher did put up impressive numbers again in week 9 with 7 catches, 135 yards and 4 touchdowns against Peoria, but the Beef's bigmen were virtually impenetrable Saturday nigh against the Bandits and helped Omaha win their first game ever in Sioux City. Omaha's starting offensive line is made up of Dan Potmesil, Cody Beguin and Brett Wetton. The three Beef bigmen helped create 253 total yards of offense, including 170 yards on the ground on 43 attempts. Along with nearly a 4-yard average on running, Omaha's line gave up zero sacks on the night and had no penalties called against them. The Beef hope their heavyweights can help lead them to another road win this weekend when they travel to Black Hills to take on the Red Dogs Saturday night.
Anthony Kelly was "The Champ" for Lexington on defense last Sunday afternoon. Kelly, know locally as "The Champ", helped lead Lexington to one of their biggest wins on the year and perhaps their greatest defensive efforts of the season. The Horsemen's defensive back earned week 9 Defensive Player of the Week honors as he helped Lexington beat the visiting Tupelo FireAnts 75-13 in Rupp Arena. Kelly was instrumental in the Horsemen secondary recording 2 pass breakups and 3 interceptions on the night. Those 3 interceptions led to 88 return yards and one touchdown. "The Champ" also recorded 4.5 tackles on the night to help hold the FireAnts to 95 total yards offense and 13 points on the afternoon.
Wrapping up the week 9 awards in the Special Teams category is Evansville kicker Erik Rockhold. Rockhold scored 12 of the teams 48 points in route to a Bluecats win over visiting Tennessee Valley. He was 3 for 5 on point after attempts and was 3 for 3 on field goals, including kicks of 19, 25 and 44 yards. The Bluecats kicker narrowly beat out fellow footmen Justin Hutton (Lexington Horsemen) and Josh Telenko (Ft. Wayne Freedom), both of which had strong performances for their special teams. Rockhold hopes to add another dozen point to his total this weekend in Sioux Falls when the Bluecats travel to take on the Storm.
League MVP's and coaching awards will be handed out at the end of the 2005 UIF season. Stay tuned weekly for additional Players-of-the-Week winners and game highlights. For all team rosters, statistics, scores, highlights and more log onto www.unitedindoorfootball.com.
