The Hops scored two unearned runs in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie, taking game one of their three game series at Eugene.
Hillsboro (17-13 second half, 39-29 overall) now leads the season series 4-3. Each team has a winning record on the other's home field (Hops 3-1, Emeralds 2-1). Eugene (18-12, 35-33) leads the Hops by a game in the NWL second half standings.
Alexis Olmeda hustled his away around the bases after a leadoff single in the 8th inning off Eugene reliever Pedro Araujo (0-1). The Hops' catcher took second when the throw back to the infield got past second baseman Frandy De La Rosa for an error. On Galli Cribbs. Jr.'s sacrifice bunt attempt, Olmeda beat the high throw to third by Araujo, then scored on a wild pitch. Trevor Mitsui drove in the second run of the inning, scoring Cribbs on a sacrifice fly for his 32nd run batted in of the season and 19th RBI in his last 13 games.
Will Landsheft (3-2) got the win in relief for the Hops after pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Cameron Gann pitched the eighth and ninth innings for his third Hops save. Troy Marks pitched the first six innings, allowing five hits (four doubles) and one earned run with four strikeouts and no walks.
Grant Heyman had two hits and reached base three times for the Hops. Dansby Swanson had a hit and two walks, including his first intentional walk as a pro. Swanson singled in the fourth and scored the first Hops run on a Mitsui double play grounder.
P.J. Higgins and Donnie Dewees each had two hits and a double for Eugene. Emeralds starting pitcher Preston Morrison struck out seven Hops batters in three innings, including the side on nine pitches in the second. Araujo was the third pitcher of the night for Eugene.
The two teams play game two of their three-game series Saturday night at 7:05 p.m., with pregame coverage beginning at 6:35 p.m. on Rip City Radio 620 AM.
