Murphy Leads 11-Hit Offense With Three Base Knocks

Ray Winder Field, Little Rock, AR - RHP Kasey Olenberger (5-5) and Tommy Murphy led the Arkansas Travelers (16-14, 50-50) to a series-opening 6-1 victory over the Springfield Cardinals (13-16, 48-51). Olenberger won his second straight start going eight innings and allowing just a run on four hits and two walks while striking out three. Murphy led a 11-hit attack with a 3-for-4 night that included two doubles, two stolen bases, a run batted in and a run scored. The Travs came back from a 1-0 deficit and scored six unanswered runs after the second inning. Springfield committed four errors and allowed four unearned runs, while the Travs stole five bases. The win is the Travs' third straight and their seventh win in eight tries. Cards LHP Randy Leek (10-6) took the loss in a five-inning start with seven hits and six runs allowed (two earned).

Springfield's 1B Juan Diaz launched a line drive home run to right-center to leadoff the second inning to give the Cards a 1-0 lead.

The Travs answered in the top of the third thanks to Springfield's first error. After two outs, Erick Aybar rolled a grounder to third base. 3B Travis Hanson muffed the play for an error and then Aybar stole his way to third. Howie Kendrick sent a book rule double off the center field warning track to tie the game.

Murphy singled and stole second base to start the fourth inning. He advanced to third base on a groundout and then David Gates lofted a fly ball to medium-depth center that was caught by RF Tyler Minges. Although Minges' throw beat Murphy to the plate, he beat the tag of C Dan Moylan for the go-ahead run and a 2-1 Travs lead.

Brent Del Chiaro led off the fifth inning with an opposite field home run to right (3) for a 3-1 lead. After an out, Aybar ripped a ball down the third base line to the corner. It bounced away from LF Cody Haerther with Aybar barreling into third base for a double and an error. Another Hanson error on a sharp grounder by Kendrick brought in Aybar. Kendrick then stole second base and scored on a double by Murphy for a 5-1 Travs lead.

Gates started the seventh inning with a double to left field. Leek walked 3B Ivan Reyes and the Cardinals brought in RHP Jeremy Cook. Reggie Willits bounced to Diaz at first base and he tried to force out Reyes at second base. But the throw bounced off Reyes' head for an error that allowed Gates to score the final run of the game.

Time of game was 2:44 and the paid attendance was 7,668.
