Oklahoma City Comets News Release
LAST GAME: The RedHawks could not hold on to a 4-0 lead, but managed to beat the Bees in 6-5 in ten innings. Nelson Cruz hit two home runs and Nate Gold added another to back Oklahoma in its fifth straight road victory. Elizardo Ramirez was staked to the 4-0 lead, but allowed one run in the fifth and three in the six before giving way to the bullpen. Kea Kometani was in line for the win, but pinch hitter John Rodriguez hit a game-tying home run in the ninth off Kiko Calero. Cruz's second home run of the game gave Oklahoma the lead for good in the top of the tenth, and Calero snagged his first win as a RedHawk.
STEALING A WIN:
Oklahoma blew its tenth save of the season last night, but Kiko Calero did pitch long enough to earn the win. The RedHawks have gone on to win sixth of those ten games, including each of the last five, a streak dating back to May 17.
HAMMERED BY HOME RUNS:
Elizardo Ramirez has surrendered 17 home runs this season, including three in each of his last two starts. The RedHawks as a staff have allowed 104 home runs, 40% of which have been allowed by three pitchers. In addition to Ramirez's 17, former RedHawk Eric Hurley allowed 15 and while Steve Rowe has given up ten. Despite all that, Oklahoma has the league's lowest earned run average at 4.11.
A NEW OLD FACE:
Texas designated Joselo Diaz for assignment on July 18 after one appearance, and outrighted him to Oklahoma earlier today. The right-hander began the season with New Orleans, but was released by the Mets early in June. Shortly thereafter, Diaz signed with Texas and was assigned to Frisco. Diaz made eight appearances for the RoughRiders before his promotion to Texas, where he pitched one inning and allowed one unearned run. This is Diaz's second stint with Oklahoma, having pitched in 28 games during the 2006 season.
GORDON GOES AGAIN:
Oklahoma will send Brian Gordon to the mound tonight for his fifth straight start. The outfielder-turned-pitcher has not allowed an earned run since the third inning of an emergency spot start on July 4, spanning 17.2 innings. As a starter this season, Gordon has an ERA of 1.57 compared to a 5.40 earned run average as a reliever for the RedHawks.
SWEET SIXTY:
The RedHawks did not win their 60th game until August 15 last season, needing 122 games to reach that plateau. Oklahoma reached the 60-win mark in 17 fewer games this year. It took until August 8 in 2006 to reach 60 wins (118 games), and August 9, 2005 to hit the same mark (116 games).
REDHAWK HOME RUN KING:
Nelson Cruz became the RedHawks all-time, single season home run leader on July 19 with a three home run game. Cruz's 34 home runs are the third-most single season tally in Oklahoma City Triple-A history, matching Chuck Harrison and Jim Beauchamp's single-season marks in 1965 and 1964, respectively. Dave Roberts is Oklahoma's all-time Triple-A leader after hitting 38 in 1965.
DOT-DOT-DOT:
The RedHawks placed second baseman German Duran on the disabled list earlier today. Duran left Tuesday's game after the third inning when he was injured sliding into second base... Kea Kometani has not allowed a run over his last 9.1 innings.
ON THE AIR:
Every game this season can be heard on the RedHawks Radio Network, led by broadcaster Jim Byers for the ninth season, and joined by Adam Marco during each homestand.
