Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
Jayson Nix hit home runs in each of the first two innings and Joe Koshansky added a blast of his own to give Colorado Springs an early 7-0 lead Thursday night. It proved to be enough as the Sky Sox defeated New Orleans 9-6 in front of 2,789 fans at Security Service Field.
The Sky Sox came running out the gate with consecutive first-inning singles from Mike McCoy and Cory Sullivan. Both runners came around to score before Jayson Nix's first home run of the game capped the scoring for the inning.
It was a similar story in the second inning when Koshansky and Nix hit back-to-back bombs to increase the lead to seven. Koshansky finished with four RBI on the night.
Jose Santiago (3-1), in a spot start for the Zephyrs, never got the ship righted after the first two innings. He lasted just three innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits.
Tim McNab relieved Santiago to begin the fourth inning and did everything he could to keep his team in the ball game. The reliever allowed just one run during his three innings of work, giving the Zephyrs' bats time to chip away at the big lead.
The Zephyrs pushed across three runs in their half of the third inning with the help of back-to-back doubles from Andy Green and Chris Aguila. They would add a run in both the fourth and fifth innings to cut the deficit to three, but that was as close as the Zephyrs would get.
Sean Smith (4-3) got the win after allowing five runs in seven innings.
The two teams close out their four-game set Friday with a 7:05 PM start time. The Sky Sox will send Franklin Morales (6-4, 3.72) to the hill against Ruddy Lugo (7-8, 4.93)
