Portland Beavers News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Brian Barton, David Freese and Nick Stavinoha drove in three runs each, and P.J. Walters earned his eighth win as the Memphis Redbirds routed the Portland Beavers 15-4 Thursday night at AutoZone Park.
The Redbirds (58-47) built a 5-0 lead over the first two innings and went on to post four different innings with three or more runs scored to take a 2-1 lead in the series.
Barton, Freese, former Beaver Rico Washington and Bryan Anderson scored three runs apiece for the Redbirds, who out-hit Portland 13-7.
Walters gave up two runs, three hits and four walks to go with four strikeouts over six innings to improve to 8-2 on the season.
His counterpart, Portland's Enrique Gonzalez (4-5), suffered the loss after giving up six runs (5 earned) on five hits and five walks across four innings in his second spot start in a row. The Redbirds got to reliever Adam Bass for six runs and Carlos Guevara for three.
Peter Ciofrone, who has a 21-game hitting streak, was 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI for the Beavers (54-49), who wrap up their series with Memphis Friday night at 5:05 p.m. (Pacific).
Down 5-0 early, the Beavers got a pair back in the third when Ciofrone hit an RBI single to extend his hitting streak and Craig Stansberry walked and eventually scored on a sac fly by Will Venable. But Memphis responded by scoring a combined seven runs over the middle three innings to take a commanding 12-2 lead.
NOTES: Before the game, the Padres recalled Josh Bard from his rehab assignment with the Beavers and recalled pitcher Justin Hampson. San Diego also optioned catcher Luke Carlin and pitcher Joe Thatcher to Portland ... pitcher Chad Reineke, who was acquired from Houston on Tuesday, was added to the Beavers' active roster ... the 15 runs were the most allowed by the Beavers since giving up 18 to Las Vegas on April 26.
