Oklahoma City Comets News Release
LAST GAME: Former RedHawk John Wasdin tossed seven full perfect innings before allowing a Chris Shelton home run to lead off the eighth in Memphis' 6-1 win over Oklahoma. Wasdin struck out 11 batters in his first start since April 26. Ryan Roberts notched the RedHawks only other hit. The RedHawks and Redbirds split the weekend series with two wins apiece.
HIGHS AND LOWS: The RedHawks struck out 16 times and managed a total of two hits in Monday afternoon's loss. The 16 strikeouts set a new season-high, surpassing May 18 at Memphis when Oklahoma struck out 14 times. The two hits also set a new season-low in a nine-inning game. The RedHawks had been held to three hits over nine innings three times this season.
REHABING ON THE ROAD: Brandon McCarthy and Gerald Laird were assigned to Oklahoma earlier today for rehab stints. McCarthy is on the Rangers 60-day disabled list with severe inflammation in his right arm, and has already made two rehab starts for the AZL Rangers. Laird was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 21 with a strained right hamstring. Both are expected to be in Oklahoma's lineup tonight.
TEAGARDEN OPTIONED: Texas optioned catcher Taylor Teagarden to Oklahoma on Monday to clear a roster spot for Scott Feldman, who started last night's game in Chicago for the Rangers. Teagarden appeared in two games for Texas since has his contract purchased last week and had one hit, a home run, in six at bats spanning two games. By optioning the catcher back to Oklahoma yesterday, Texas can still allow the University of Texas product to travel to Beijing for the 2008 Olympics. Matt Turek and Double-A Reading's Lou Marson (Philadelphia) were the only two catchers selected by Davey Johnson for the upcoming Summer Games. Nick Trzesniak was placed on the disabled list, clearing a roster spot for Teagarden.
TO THE WEST: The RedHawks will play the next 16 games against Pacific Conference opponents. Oklahoma went 6-10 in last April and early May during its other run of Pacific opponents, going 3-5 on the road at Portland and Tacoma, then winning three of eight at home against Sacramento and Fresno.
REDHAWK HOME RUN KING:
Nelson Cruz became the RedHawks all-time, single season home run leader on July 19 with a three home run game. Cruz's 31 home runs are the fifth-most tally in Oklahoma City Triple-A history, trailing Lee Stevens by one (1996) for fourth. Dave Roberts is the all-time Triple-A leader after hitting 38 in 1968.
SALT LAKE AT A GLANCE:
The Bees were baseball's best team in April, posting a 23-2 record, but have gone 37-40 since May 1... Salt Lake lost three of four at Fresno over the weekend and have lost six of their last eight following a five game winning streak from July 7 through July 11... No pitcher in the league has thrown more innings than Shane Loux, the Bees scheduled starter in Friday's finale.
DOT-DOT-DOT:
Oklahoma will return to conference play on August 8 at Albuquerque... The RedHawks enter play with the PCL's second lowest ERA despite allowing five earned runs on Monday... Nelson Cruz had his hitting streak snapped at six games yesterday, while Drew Meyer saw his on-base streak stopped at 14 games... Oklahoma is hitting .241 this month, on pace for the lowest average in any month of the RedHawks 2008 season.
ON THE AIR:
Every game this season can be heard on the RedHawks Radio Network, led by broadcaster Jim Byers for the ninth season, and joined by Adam Marco during each homestand. Fox Sports Radio AM 1340 in Oklahoma City will serve as the flagship station in 2008.
