D'Antona gets the call

Tucson, AZ - The Arizona Diamondbacks purchased the contract of Sidewinders Third Baseman Jamie D'Antona Tuesday evening when the team placed Outfielder Eric Byrnes on the 60-man disabled list. The promotion to the Major Leagues is the first for D'Antona in his sixth professional season.

In his second year with the Sidewinders D'Antona, 26, was leading the club in batting average (.367), hits (126), on-base percentage (.407), slugging percentage (.612) and doubles (31) at the time of his call up. He recently represented the Diamondbacks organization at both the Futures Game in Yankee Stadium and the Triple-A All-Star game in Louisville, KY. D'Antona won the Triple-A Home Run Derby and delivered the go ahead RBI in the Pacific Coast League's 6-5 victory over the International League in the Triple-A All-Star Game.

The Diamondbacks selected D'Antona in the 2nd round (66th overall) in the 2003 Amateur Draft out of Wake Forest University. He was a part of the same Diamondbacks draft that also produced First Baseman Conor Jackson and Outfielder Carlos Quentin. D'Antona will become the fourth 2008 Sidewinder to make his Major League debut this season joining Outfielder Alex Romero and Righthanded Pitchers Max Scherzer and Leo Rosales.
