ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Oklahoma City Dodgers (21-21) collected an 8-6 victory over the Round Rock Express (24-18) after a late rally fell just short in Tuesday night's series finale at Dell Diamond. The E-Train plated four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but ultimately couldn't overcome an early 8-0 deficit as the Dodgers collected a 5-1 series win.
Express starter RHP Tyler Phillips (0-1, 54.00) suffered the loss in his Triple-A debut after allowing four runs on three hits and two walks in 0.2 innings. Oklahoma City starter RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx (5-1, 4.31) earned his second victory of the series after limiting Round Rock to two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five in 5.0 frames.
The visitors raced out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. CF DJ Peters and RF Luke Raley worked back-to-back walks to begin the game before consecutive RBI singles by 2B Sheldon Neuse and 1B Yoshi Tsutsugo made it a 2-0 contest. After RHP Collin Wiles entered in relief, C Tim Federowicz lined a two-run single to right field.
An inning later, Raley hit his third home run of the series, a solo shot that extended the gap to 5-0. OKC continued their offensive onslaught in the third as DH Matt Davidson launched a solo homer of his own. SS Carlos Asuaje then singled prior to a two-run bomb off the bat of Federowicz.
Round Rock's first of two run-scoring frames came in the bottom of the third. 3B Ryan Dorow collected the team's first base hit with a one-out single prior to a single by SS Yonny Hernandez. Rehabbing Texas Rangers LF David Dahl then cleared the bases with a triple, trimming the score to 8-2. Dahl finished the third game of his rehab assignment 1-3 with two RBI and a strikeout.
After five scoreless innings, a dramatic Express rally fell just short in the bottom of the ninth. RF Leody Taveras led off with a double before 2B Charles Leblanc followed up with an RBI single. Dorow then smoked his first career Triple-A home run, a two-run blast that clanked off the Home Run Porch in deep left field.
The inning continued as Hernandez singled, forcing Oklahoma City skipper Travis Barbary to call on RHP Kevin Quackenbush out of the bullpen. The righty recorded two quick outs before an RBI double by DH Yohel Pozo trimmed the score to 8-6. C John Hicks then worked a walk to bring the go-ahead run to the plate, however Quackenbush recovered by forcing 1B Curtis Terry into a flyout to end the contest.
Round Rock now heads west for a six-game showdown against the El Paso Chihuahuas. Express RHP Tyson Miller (0-0, 6.00) is scheduled to face Chihuahuas LHP Ryan Weathers (1-0, 0.00) in Thursday night's series opener. First pitch at Southwest University Park is set for 8:05 p.m. CT.
