OKC RedHawks Game Notes August 24th

August 24, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Comets News Release

The Oklahoma City RedHawks continue their series in Omaha with the fourth of a 5-game set against the Royals. Omaha leads the series 2-1. The teams split a twin bill yesterday and will wrap up the season series tomorrow night at Rosenblatt Stadium. Omaha leads the season series 8-6. OKC is second, 7.5 games back of Albuquerque, in the American South. Omaha is fourth, 13 back of Memphis in the American North. The RedHawks will start righthander Kris Benson, his first outing as a RedHawk against Omaha. The Royals counter with lefty Mike O'Connor, who has also played in the Washington and San Diego organizations this year.

ROLLER COASTER GOING UP? An 8-3 loss in Game 1 of yesterday's doubleheader dropped the RedHawks into a season-high 6-game losing streak, but the skid was stopped by a 4-2 win in the second game. The 6-game losing streak immediately followed a 6-game winning streak from Aug. 11-17. That upswing came on the heels of a stretch where the RedHawks lost 9 of 12 from July 30-Aug. 10.

DIVISION RACE UPDATE: The RedHawks are 7.5 games back of Albuquerque in the American South Division. OKC has been in sole possession of second place for two months. The last time they shared second was June 22. Albuquerque's magic number to clinch the division is 9.

STREAKS END FOR DAVIS, BENAJMIN: Chris Davis had his 23-game on-base streak end in yesterday's first game. Casey Benjamin saw a 19-game on-base streak end in the second game. Reliever Brian Gordon has not allowed a run in August, a scoreless stretch of 6 games and 9 innings. Lefty reliever Mike Hinckley allowed a pair of runners inherited from Bryan Corey to score in yesterday's opener, but Hinckley has not been charged with a run in August, putting up zeros in 7 games and 9.0 innings.

STARTERS MAKING AN IMPACT: The OKC starting pitcher received a win (Elizardo Ramirez) and a loss (Bryan Corey) yesterday. RedHawks starters have gotten a decision in 24 of the last 29 games. In that span, the starters are 11-13 and the relievers are 2-3.

METCALF: The Texas Rangers signed infielder Travis Metcalf as a free agent yesterday and assigned him to OKC, reuniting the former Kansas Jayhawk with his original organization. An 11th-round pick of Texas in 2004, Metcalf spent parts of 2007 and 2008 with Texas and Oklahoma City before being claimed off waivers by the Royals April 8, the day before the PCL season started.

BEEN THERE: Yesterday's doubleheader between the RedHawks and Royals was the ninth between these clubs in the last 4 seasons. OKC has totaled 16 conventional, 7-inning game doubleheaders from 2006-2009 and 9 have been against Omaha for weather or other postponements. The last time Omaha and OKC did not have a twin bill was the 2005, when the RedHawks had just one doubleheader the entire season.

NEW NAME FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: The Bricktown Showdown, which the PCL champion has won all three years its been played, is now the Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game. The annual meeting of the playoff champions from the International and Pacific Coast Leagues takes place at Oklahoma City's AT&T Bricktown Ballpark Sept. 22 at 6 pm CDT and will be broadcast live again this season on ESPN2 and Westwood One radio.
