Iowa Cubs News Release

Mitch Atkins threw seven solid innings and Micah Hoffpauir knocked in three runs, leading the Iowa Cubs (66-64) to a 7-4 win over the New Orleans Zephyrs (56-72) Monday at Principal Park.

The Cubs jumped out to an early lead with three first inning runs, and held onto the lead throughout the game. After So Taguchi got on base to start the inning, back-to-back-to-back doubles by John-Ford Griffin, Hoffpauir, and Brad Snyder gave the Cubs a 3-0 lead.

New Orleans cut the lead to 3-2 with single runs in the third and fourth innings, but the Cubs extended their lead with two more runs in the fifth inning and Hoffpauir knocked in two more with a two-run single in the sixth.

Atkins (7-11) allowed just two runs on five hits in seven innings to earn the victory. Making his team-leading 25th start of the season, the right-hander struck out five and walked two.

A two-run home run by former I-Cub Gookie Dawkins off David Patton in the eighth inning brought the Zephyrs within 7-4. After New Orleans got two runners on with two outs in the ninth, Vince Perkins came in to get the final out, earning his third save of the season.

After finishing 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored, Hoffpauir moved within two RBI of tying Joe Hicks (1981-84, '86) for the franchise record. Hicks knocked in 281 runs in 580 games as an I-Cub, while Hoffpauir has knocked in 279 runs in just 366 career contests.

Griffin finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Andres Blanco went 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, and a pair of runs scored.

The Cubs and Zephyrs will meet in the rubber match of their five-game series at Principal Park tomorrow night at 6:35 p.m. Left-hander J.R. Mathes (12-6, 3.36) will pitch for Iowa, and right-hander Brian Lawrence (5-4, 5.40) will start for the Zephyrs.

Notes: The Cubs seven runs on Monday were more than they had scored in their previous five games combined (six) ... The back-to-back-to-back doubles in the first inning was a first for the I-Cubs this season.
