Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Salt Lake City, Utah - The Oklahoma City Dodgers went deep four times and the pitching staff struck out 15 batters, working out of jams all night during a 9-3 victory over the Salt Lake Bees Tuesday night at Smith's Ballpark.
The game was scoreless until there were two outs in the bottom of the third inning. With the count full, Justin Bour sent a line drive off the batter's eye to put Salt Lake in the lead. On the very next pitch, Jared Walsh hit a homer to deep right field, making it 2-0.
After being held scoreless and to one hit through the first three innings, the Dodgers (50-57) scored in five of the final six innings, totaling nine runs and nine hits, with four home runs. Kyle Garlick tied the score with a two-run homer to right-center field in the fourth inning.
The Bees loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but Dodgers pitcher Brock Stewart struck out Jose Rojas to end the threat.
Edwin RÃ-os put the Dodgers ahead with a three-run blast off the batter's eye in the fifth inning, as RÃ-os homered for a third straight game.
Drew Jackson made it three straight innings with a dinger when he launched his fifth homer of the season out to center field in the sixth, making in 6-2.
With two runners on and two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Rojas came up again and sent a fly ball to deep center field. DJ Peters went back and leaped at the wall, making the catch to likely save two runs from scoring and finish the inning.
Garlick collected this second extra-base hit of the night when he lined a run-scoring double to left field in the seventh inning, putting the Dodgers ahead, 7-2.
The Bees (48-60) ended the streak of seven straight runs by the Dodgers in the eighth inning with a RBI single by Anthony Bemboom. After two straight strikeouts, the next two batters reached base, loading the bases for Michael Hermosillo. Dodgers reliever Victor Gonzalez struck out Hermosillo on a 3-2 pitch, as the Bees left the bases loaded for the second time.
Peters tallied the team's final homer with a two-run, line drive bullet to left field in the ninth inning, pushing the lead to 9-2. Peters has now gone deep in three of his last four games.
The game ended appropriately with Taylor Ward striking out and two runners on base. The teams combined for 31 strikeouts and 17 walks throughout the night. The Bees left 16 runners on base, with at least two runners left on in six different innings. The Dodgers held Salt Lake 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, and even though the Bees drew nine walks, none of them eventually scored.
Stewart (5-7) allowed two runs on four hits over five innings to claim the win. He notched a season-high eight strikeouts, but also issued four walks.
Bees reliever Sam Freeman allowed the tying and go-ahead home runs over the fourth and fifth innings in the loss. Freeman (0-1) surrendered a total of four runs and four hits, with four walks and two strikeouts.
The Dodgers continue their series against the Bees at 8:05 p.m. Central time Wednesday at Salt Lake. Live radio coverage of each game begins 15 minutes before first pitch on AM 1340 "The Game," 1340thegame.com and through the free iHeartRadio or MiLB First Pitch apps.
