Today's Game: The Oklahoma City Baseball Club closes out a six-game series against the Salt Lake Bees at 2:05 p.m. at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. OKC leads the Bees, 3-2, and seeks back-to-back wins and earn a series victory...Today is a City Celebration Sunday and players and coaches will wear commemorative city-themed jerseys and 405 area code caps on the field...All Sunday home games this season will air live on KOCB-TV in Oklahoma City - Channel 34 through digital antennas and DirecTV and on Channel 11 through Cox cable.
Last Game: The Oklahoma City Baseball Club held the Salt Lake Bees without a hit through eight innings and later scored the game-winning run in the 11th inning when Kevin Padlo hit into a fielder's choice for a 5-4 victory Saturday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Salt Lake scored the first run of the night on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Oklahoma City tied the score in the fourth inning on a solo home run out to center field by Miguel Vargas. Oklahoma City went ahead, 3-1, the fifth inning, scoring runs on a RBI single by Drew Avans and another on a fielder's choice. Meanwhile, Oklahoma City pitchers held the Bees without a hit until Jason Martin led off the ninth inning with a single. Salt Lake then went on to plate two runs in the ninth inning to tie the score, 3-3, scoring a run on an OKC fielding error and another on a groundout. The teams exchanged runs in the 10th inning with the Bees scoring a run on a wild pitch and OKC answering via a RBI single by Chris Owings. OKC pitcher Jesse Hahn (1-0) retired all three Bees batters in the top of the 11th inning before Padlo hit into a fielder's choice in OKC's next at-bat, allowing Vargas to score the game-winning run from third base.
Today's Probable Pitcher: Landon Knack (0-1) is scheduled to make his fourth start of the season with Oklahoma City but first after making his Major League debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers...Each of Knack's last three starts were with LAD, where he posted a 2.81 ERA and 1-1 record over 16.0 innings with five walks against 11 strikeouts. He held ML hitters to a .193 batting average to go along with a 1.00 WHIP...He made ML debut April 17 against Washington at Dodger Stadium, throwing 5.0 innings and allowing two runs and four hits with one walk and four strikeouts, but was charged with the loss as LAD was blanked, 2-0. He then earned his first career win in his next start April 24 at Washington after allowing two runs over 6.0 innings...Knack last pitched Tuesday night in Arizona, allowing one run over five-plus innings in a no decision...Knack was OKC's Opening Night starter in Tacoma March 29, pitching 5.0 scoreless innings, and ended up making three starts with OKC before his call-up...Knack split time between OKC and Tulsa last season, going a combined 5-1 in 22 starts with a 2.51 ERA over 100.1 innings with 99 strikeouts and 30 walks, setting career highs in starts, innings and strikeouts...He was promoted to OKC in mid-June and made 10 starts in Triple-A, allowing one or no runs in six of his final eight starts. He went 3-1 with a 2.93 ERA and 38 strikeouts before being placed on the IL Aug. 25 and not playing for the rest of the season...He entered the season as the No. 11 prospect in the Dodgers system by Baseball America and the No. 14 prospect by MLB Pipeline...The Johnson City, Tenn., native was selected in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft out of East Tennessee State...Tonight is his third career appearance against Salt Lake. He made two starts against the Bees in 2023, going 1-0 with a 3.72 ERA over 9.2 innings with six walks and seven strikeouts.
Against the Bees: 2024: 3-2 2023: 4-7 All-time: 74-68 At OKC: 41-32 OKC and the Bees are playing their first of two series during the 2024 season. This is the lone series the teams will play in Oklahoma City as well as in the first half of the season as the teams will close out the 2024 schedule against one another at Smith's Ballpark Sept. 17-22...Salt Lake won last season's series between the teams, 7-4, and won five of the final seven games including four of the six games in an August series in Salt Lake...Last season marked the first time since 2013 that OKC lost a season series to the Bees. OKC had gone 7-0-1 in season series against Salt Lake until 2023...Drew Avans led OKC with 13 hits in 11 games against Salt Lake last season, while Ryan Ward paced OKC with three homers and Michael Busch had 10 RBI...Scoring in the season series ended up fairly even, with the Bees finishing with a 69-67 advantage in runs...Since OKC became affiliated with the Dodgers in 2025, the team owns a 35-23 advantage against the Bees in the Triple-A version of the Freeway Series...Salt Lake enters today having won nine of the last 15 meetings, seven of the last 12 meetings as well as five of the last nine games in OKC.
Hitting A Wall: Oklahoma City pitchers did not allow a hit through eight innings before Salt Lake broke through with two hits in the ninth inning. It was the first time since 2016 that Oklahoma City carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning, occurring exactly eight years ago to the day during a 5-0 win over New Orleans on May 4...Starting pitcher Hyun-il Choi threw six no-hit innings, allowing one run with four walks and three strikeouts, before Matt Gage and Ricky Vanasco followed with scoreless and hitless seventh and eighth innings, respectively. Jason Martin hit a leadoff single in the ninth inning to end the no-hitter, but OKC went on to hold the Bees to two total hits through 11 innings - the fewest hits allowed by OKC since May 30, 2023 when the team limited Reno to two hits at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in a nine-inning game. The two hits allowed over 11 innings Saturday were also the fewest allowed by OKC in an extra-inning game since at least 2005.
Extra Credit: Oklahoma City recorded its first walk-off win of the season in the team's second extra-inning game of 2024 - and first at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. OKC's other extra-inning game this season was in the season opener March 29 at Tacoma, which OKC lost, 1-0, in 11 innings...Last season, OKC piled up nine walk-off wins and played in a total of 13 extra-inning games.
Beekeepers: Oklahoma City pitchers have held the Bees to 16 total runs through the first five games of the series and to four runs or less each game, including three games allowing three runs or less. The Bees have been held scoreless in 37 of 47 innings so far during the series, including 36 of 45 non-extra innings...Salt Lake has six extra-base hits so far in the series - all doubles - and last night was the second time in the series the Bees did not register an extra-base hit...Starting/primary pitchers have combined to allow five earned runs, 21 hits and eight walks over 26.1 innings while recording 25 strikeouts. During the previous series in Albuquerque, starting pitchers allowed 32 runs, 44 hits and 15 walks over just 20.1 innings across six games...OKC's pitching staff has 49 K's so far in the series and overall this season, OKC's 307 strikeouts are tied for third-most in the league behind Sacramento (316 K's) and Reno (315 K's)...OKC has held Salt Lake 7-for-46 (.152) with runners in scoring position throughout the series.
Where's the Bee-f?: OKC had eight hits Saturday and has gone a combined 17-for-94 (.181) over the last three games against the Bees after batting .331 over the previous eight games. OKC recorded its first extra-base hit in the last three games when Miguel Vargas homered in the fourth inning. Entering Saturday, OKC had been held without an extra-base hit in consecutive games since July 24-25, 2014, when the team went a combined 8-for-58 between games at home against Round Rock and at Nashville. The team had piled up 54 XBH in the previous eight games leading into Thursday...Oklahoma City did score five runs last night and has now scored at least five runs in 11 of the last 12 games, and the team's 94 runs scored since April 21 are the most in Triple-A. The team's 127 hits in the last 12 games are third-most in Triple-A behind Albuquerque (133) and Reno (133)...Overall this season, OKC's .494 SLG and .858 OPS pace the PCL. OKC is batting .280 overall as a team this season - third-best in the league - and OKC's 206 runs scored and 313 hits are both third-most in the PCL.
Dinger Details: Miguel Vargas homered in the fourth inning last night after OKC was held without a homer in back-to-back games. Prior to Thursday, OKC had hit a home run in a season-best eight consecutive games April 23-May 1, blasting 19 homers in that time...Since April 12 (20 games), OKC's 36 home runs are the most in the Minors, and OKC's 47 total home runs this season are second-most in the PCL...OKC also did not allow a home run Saturday and has kept the opponent inside the park in six of the last eight games, including a season-high five straight. OKC has allowed 26 total homers this season - tied for fewest in the league with Sacramento. And in 17 home games, OKC has allowed a league-low seven home runs.
Drew Up: Drew Avans went 2-for-5 with a RBI Saturday, recording his third multi-hit effort in the last four games and his team-leading 14th multi-hit game of the season. Avans leads OKC with six hits during the current series, going 6-for-17...Since April 21, Avans has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games with an at-bat, going 17-for-49 (.347) with five extra-base hits and 15 runs scored...Avans' triple in the first inning Wednesday afternoon was his team-best fourth of the season and his 22nd career triple with Oklahoma City, moving him into a tie for first place on OKC's all-time career list for triples in the Bricktown era (since 1998) with Joaquin Arias (2006-09)...Avans also now owns sole possession of first place on OKC's all-time career walks list as he drew his 195th walk with OKC Wednesday, breaking a tie with Esteban Germán (2005; 2009-10). His 353 career hits are fourth all-time...This season, Avans leads OKC with 38 hits, 30 runs scored, four triples and seven stolen bases...His 30 runs are second-most in the PCL, while his four triples are tied for second and his 38 hits are third-most in the league.
The Warden: Reigning PCL Player of the Week Ryan Ward went 1-for-4 Saturday and over his last eight games is 11-for-31 (.355) with six home runs, 12 RBI and nine runs scored...Since April 23, Ward's six homers are the most in Triple-A while his 12 RBI are tied for third...He became the first OKC player of the season to be named PCL Player of the Week Monday, receiving the honor for April 22-28 after going 9-for-19 with five homers, a double, 11 RBI and eight runs scored in five games.
Around the Horn: Trey Sweeney drew his league-leading 26th walk of the season last night and has reached base in 29 of 30 games this season...OKC went 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position Saturday, and over the last eight games, the team is 13-for-67 (.194) with RISP...Over the first 17 games this season played under the ABS Challenge System, OKC is 12-for-48 (25.0 percent) in challenges, including 1-for-15 over the last five Challenge Games. Of the 90 total challenged pitches in the 17 Challenge Games, 64 have been confirmed (71.1 percent)...OKC is 2-0 in series finales at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark so far this season...Kody Hoese has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games, going 12-for-40 (.300) with six extra-base hits and seven RBI...Reliever Michael Petersen has not yielded a run in 12 of his 13 appearances this season, giving up a total of two runs and seven hits over 12.1 innings with 17 strikeouts...Including last night, OKC is now 6-6 in one-run games and is tied with Sacramento and Salt Lake for the most one-run games played in the PCL this season.
