Tulsa Oilers News Release
The Tulsa Oilers went 2-1 last week, and now stand at 20-23-10, 50 points, 5th place in the CHL's Northwest Division. Tulsa trails fourth-place Oklahoma City by 5 points.
The Oilers opened up their week hosting the Colorado Eagles for the second straight Tuesday. Colorado exploded on offense, scoring 3 short-handed goals, 2 power-play goals, and 3 even-strength goals to rout the Oilers 8-1 at the Tulsa Convention Center. Eight different Eagles found the net, while Greg Pankewicz and Karlis Zirnis recorded two assists each. Jason Bermingham scored the lone goal for Tulsa.
The Wichita Thunder was the Oilers' next challenge on Friday night, as the Thunder came into the game in second place in the Northwest Division, looking to inch their way closer to a playoff spot. But the Oilers would play spoiler on this night, as Dan Gravelle scored twice and Wes Scanzano assisted twice as Tulsa edged Wichita 3-2. Jordon Flodell recorded three assists, and Chris Page added a goal and a helper to lead the way for Tulsa. Tim Kelleher stopped 39 to earn his third win of the season.
The Oilers then concluded their week hosting the New Mexico Scorpions on Saturday. Tulsa faced two-goal deficits twice in the game, but battled back to tie the game. With less than eight seconds remaining and goalie Tim Kelleher on the bench for an extra attacker, Branislav Kvetan knocked home a rebound to knot the score up at 4-4 and send it into overtime. In the extra frame, Todd Marcellus had an apparent game-winning goal called off by referee Paul Mariconda, forcing a shootout. In the shootout, Tim Kelleher stepped up his game, stopping all 5 Scorpion attempts. However, the first four Oilers couldn't score either, and it came to down the last shooter, Wes Scanzano, who buried his chance and gave Tulsa an improbable 5-4 shootout victory. The large crowd of 6,795 erupted as the Oilers celebrated their huge win.
For the game, Todd Marcellus tallied three points (2G, A), while Jason Bermingham and Regan Harper each added two assists. Tim Kelleher made 36 saves, including all 5 in the shootout, to earn back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Mike Oliveira scored two goals and an assist in the loss for New Mexico.
