Tulsa Oilers News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - A crucial four-game road trip didn't get off to the kind of the start the Tulsa Oilers had hoped. In their first visit of the season to Arizona, the Oilers offense was stifled in a 3-1 loss to the Sundogs.
Arizona forward Johan Ryd broke a scoreless tie with only 25 seconds left in the first period when he re-directed Ron Meyers shot past Shane Madolora.
The two sides went scoreless in the second period and the Sundogs carried the 1-0 advantage into the third.
Less than two minutes into the final frame, Arizona capitalized on a 4-on-3 powerplay. With Gary Steffes and Sean Erickson in the box for Tulsa, Sundogs defenseman Kirill Tulupov blasted a shot through Madolora to give the home side a two-goal cushion.
The lead held until the waning moments of regulation when the Oilers were finally able to solve Arizona goalie Adam Russo. Jeff Buvinow one-timed a Ryan Menei pass into the net to pull the Oilers within one, but the offense came too late for the comeback to be completed. Ryd fired into the empty net with just one second remaining to seal the Arizona victory, its first over Tulsa this season.
The Oilers fell to 6-19-0 on the road and are only 1-27-3 when trailing after two periods this season.
The regulation defeat means the Oilers were unable to gain any ground in the CHL playoff race. With 13 games left in the regular season, Tulsa is still 10 points out of a playoff spot.
The Oilers and Sundogs will meet again on Tuesday evening for a 7:05 p.m. Central Time start.
