Edmonton Road Runners News Release

The Edmonton Oilers announced today that they have assigned defenceman Jeff Woywitka to the Toronto Roadrunners of the American Hockey League.

Woywitka, 20, was acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for the rights to centre Mike Comrie. The Oilers also receive the Flyers first round choice in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft and the Flyers third round pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

The 6'2", 210 lbs. blue liner is playing his first professional season, and has recorded 6 assists and 51 penalty minutes in 29 games for Philadelphia's American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms.

Woywitka was drafted in the first round, 27th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

The native of Vermillion, Alberta, played four seasons with the Western Hockey League's Red Deer Rebels, appearing in 268 games, recording 41 goals, 99 assists, and 327 penalty minutes. Woywitka helped lead the Rebels to a Memorial Cup Championship in 2001.

In his final season with the Rebels, Woywitka won the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as the WHL's most outstanding defenceman and was named to the Eastern Conference's First All-Star team.

He was a member of the 2003 silver medal winning Canadian National Junior Team and helped Canada's Under 18 team win the gold medal at the Four Nations Cup in the Czech Republic in 2000.

Woywitka will play his first game for Toronto on Thursday, December 18th, when the Roadrunners host his former team, the Philadelphia Phantoms at the Ricoh Coliseum at 7:00 PM.

Tickets for Thursday's game, and for all Toronto Roadrunners home games are available at the Ricoh Coliseum Box Office, at all TicketMaster outlets, by calling TicketMaster at (416) 872-5000 or on the Internet by visiting www.ticketmaster.com.
