Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings kicked off their weekend with a 6-4 win over the visiting Prince Albert Raiders at Rogers Place on Friday night.
The Oil Kings roared out to a 3-0 after 20 minutes after getting goals from Landon Hanson, Rhys Pederson and Marc Lajoie in the first period.
Hanson's fourth goal of the season came 11:49 into the frame after taking a perfectly placed stretch pass from Lajoie at the Prince Albert blueline, streaking in on a breakaway and firing a shot past the glove hand of Max Hildebrand.
Pederson registered his first goal of the season 3:32 later after he drove to the Raiders net and had a rebound off a Skyler Bruce shot pinball in off his body.
Lajoie connected on his 15th goal of the season with just 2:14 left in the period as he took a pass from Gavin Hodnett in the right circle and pumped a one-timer into a gaping Raiders net on a 5-on-3 power play. The goal was Lajoie's 10th power play goal of the season which is now the most by an Oil Kings defenceman in a single season as he moved past Simon Kubicek who had nine during the 2021-22 season.
In the second period, the Oil Kings were able to push their lead to four after Bruce tipped in a shot from Smyth Rebman for his 13th of the season at the 10:59 mark of the middle stanza.
The Raiders drew back to within three goals before the second intermission after Niall Crocker snagged a power play goal less than two minutes after the Bruce marker.
In the third period, the Raiders refused to go quietly as Turner McMillen pulled P.A. to within two less than four minutes into the final frame converting on a cross-ice pass from Luke Moroz.
Roan Woodward collected his ninth goal of the season to put Edmonton back up by three with just under 10 minutes left in the game after stuffing in a wraparound at the side of the Raiders net.
Less than three minutes later though, the Raiders responded after Crocker collected his second of the contest tipping in a point shot from Eric Johnston.
Crocker then completed his hat-trick with 2:04 left on the clock to bring Prince Albert to within a goal but that would be as close as they would come after Ty Nash salted the game away with his 14th goal of the season into an empty net.
Kolby Hay finished the night making 36 saves, while Hildebrand and Nathan Preston combined for 25. Both teams went 1-for-2 on the power play.
